When did you stop using the infant carrier?

DD is not even 4 months old but the infant carrier is already driving me nuts. It is WAY too heavy with her in it. I consider myself a relatively strong woman but I feel like carrying her in the infant carrier could cause an injury at some point. I'm planning to install our Britax Marathon in the car so I can just carry DD in and out of daycare. When did you ditch the infant carrier and go for an installed car seat?

On a side note, I told my friend when I was pregnant and registering for stuff that I was going to get the Snugride that goes up to 32 lbs. She said I was nuts because there is no way I could carry a baby that is 32 lbs in the Snugride. I was thinking, "oh, it can't be that heavy...". Now I totally get it.

Re: When did you stop using the infant carrier?

  • We stopped carrying around the infant carrier when DS was about 4 months old.  We used it like a convertible seat until he was 7 months old though.  It was nice to have the option to carry it if we wanted to.

He hated the infant seat though, so it was a bit of a relief to move him to the convertible.

  • funny, Warner is over 18 pounds now so he is SO heavy in the infant seat, but Ken and I are going to delay switching to the regular car seat as long as possible because it's the only way we can guarantee that we stay spit-up free when we take him places ;-)

but in your case, can you just take her in and out of the infant seat like it's a regular car seat?

Well, that would work except that DH usually does daycare drop off and I do pick-up. So, the way we do it now is we leave the infant carrier at the daycare which means that when I pick her up, I have to find a way to get her and the carrier to the car. That's why I'm thinking of installing the Britax and then I can have DH leave the infant carrier in his car. Now I just have to see if I can make an appointment to get the Britax installed because I read the directions and it still seems confusing Smile

  • We switched Lily to the Britax Roundabout at 7 months. The infant seat was just SO heavy; it was killing my back. Also, she got to the point that she hated being in a reclining position in the infant seat. I'd put her in it and while I was trying to strap her in, she'd grab the side and try to pull herself to an upright position.

That being said, I do miss the infant carrier sometimes. That whole 'pop it in and pop it out' convenience is nice, esp if I just need to run into a store. It's a whole lot easier than having to unbuckle the Roundabout, haul her out then strap her back in again.

  • oh I love the new siggy pic! She's so cute!

We're having the same issue you are- DS is just too darn big! We went out and purchased one of those ergo baby carriers this weekend because we're going to start leaving the car seat in the car. We're going to hold off on getting a new car seat though. Want to get our money's worth out of this one. But, with the way DS is growing, it won't be long.....

  • We switched Maggie around 8 mo but there is no way I can last that long with Molly since she is so much heavier and it is killing my arm.
  • we kept DD in it till recently, 9-10mo maybe? yes, it's very heavy but you can't beat the convenience! I miss it! and with winter coming, you can buckle the baby in at home, put a blanket over her and take her to the car all warm. Can't do that if you are carrying her and then strapping her in.

the other big thing I miss is if she fell asleep in the car, I'd just carry her in. Now I'll sit in the car w/ her waiting for her to wake up, b/c I am totally in the "never wake a sleeping baby" camp, esp. since DD is such a bad sleeper and napper, I'll take what I can!

  • We used the carrier until DS was about 7-8 months.  But from about 5 months on, we just kept the carrier in the car and would take the baby in/out.
  • We switched DD to the Britax (we have a Marathon in each car now) around 6.5 or 7 months.  Besides being heavy (and actually, DD's a lightweight, only 15.5 lbs now, but still heavier than a newborn), her legs are long and I always felt like I was going to run her feet into things.  Plus, she hated being strapped into it, and it really didn't look comfortable.  She fights much less now that she's in the convertible seat.  I keep her shopping cart cover in the trunk for the store, and bring her Bjorn and stroller with us if we'll need them.  I am glad we are done with the infant carrier for many reasons!  :)

  • We installed one of the convertible ones in my car when Wes was about 5 months old, and DH kept the infant carrier in his until we purchased the second one.  Now we just have to remember to keep a burp cloth with us so we can make sure we don't end up with a trail of spit-up down our backs!

  • We've been weighing buying a new car seat too.  DD is almost 7 months and weights over 16 lbs.  We DO have the safeseat that goes to 32 lbs but I would never recommend it.  It's just too heavy.
  • We lugged DD around until about 6 months, when we got a Boulevard and an umbrella stroller.  Much easier.  :-)
  • We are in the same situation (DH drops off, I pick up) and we just installed a convertible seat in my car this weekend.  DD was 17 lbs at 3 months (we find out tomorrow how much she weighs now) and I just hate carrying the Snugride with her in it.

  • We switched around 8 months, although we could have used it until she was almost 12 months.  The infant seat was just too heavy, and I wanted to use the convertible since we already bought it.  I miss the convenience because she falls asleep in the car all the time.

Absolutely.  Sofka, sometimes I think we have the same DD.

  • 9m for C and 7m for J. Usually when they hit 15 pounds.
  • At about 5 months we stopped taking the carrier in and out of the car and just treated it like an installed car seat.  We have the same drop off/pick up thing sometimes too - I've been known to carry the empty carrier in one hand and the kid on my hip in the other hand.  People probably think I'm nuts, but I'd rather have the weight of the carrier and the kid balanced on either side of me.
