How does one get strep.......

......while on antibiotics.  That's right.....just finished up a round of antibiotics on Thursday for a sinus infection and just tested positive for strep yesterday.  This supports my theory that Amoxicillin doesn't work for me.  I'm starting to get a little worried about taking all this medicine, though!  Oh well, at least it's not the flu, I guess.

    I'm taking my DD to the dr. this afternoon b/c I think she has strep. I'm worried that I will get it too ;( Hope you feel better soon!

    It's the bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics, not the person.  So, the strep bacteria you have are resistant to amoxicillin...a little odd, but not unheard of today.  Probably the amox. knocked out so much or your natural good bacteria in your throat that the strep that's around naturally overgrew b/c it wasn't competing for resources.  Make sure you tell your doctor that you've been on amoxicillin for a sinus infection so they'll need to use a different type of antibiotic for the strep throat.  That sucks that you've got to keep taking antibiotics and keep feeling bad though.

    I called my OB and the PrimaCare doctor gave me a shot of Rocephin and a Z-Pac.  So, yeah, they gave me something different.  I never thought of the medicine killing good bacteria, thus making way for bad bacteria.  I know it happens, just never thought about it.

     

    I was given Amoxicillin as a "preventative" medicine when I was little for chronic ear infections, and I've been given Amoxicillin frequently because I get frequent sinus infections (doctors don't really listen to me when I tell them Amoxicillin isn't really effective for me).  So, it's not really surprising that I have Amoxicillin resistant bacteria.......
