Scary! What the he!! is going on??? I do believe in increased awareness since the autism spectrum is quite extensive. But I'm hoping this will finally get some attention by scientists - someone needs to figure this out!
(I'm thinking that Jenny McCarthy will be doing the press circuit again!)
Re: New Autism Rates
well the article did say that they think that Autism spectrum disorders are going down and it could be due to misdiagnosis.....
it's still scary though and the instance in boys v. girls and also minority cases v. non- hispanic cases is startling
I was thinking this too...
I was as well....
But also...the alarmist in me thinks about all of the over medicating and over vaccinating that these same people are are doing to their kids. Specifically because of good medical insurance. But in a way - the race statistic doesn't bother me in terms of worrying about my own children getting on the spectrum. Because if anything...they may be missing children in the other groups...which would even lead to a higher %age.
Also, this study was done by conducting a phone survey. I don't have much faith in phone surveys. Especially since people who have difficult to deal with children are a bit more likely to proceed with the survey because they want to feel like they are contributing to better understanding and because they it is a bit like venting. The article also points out that there was another survey which, when compared, showed a 40% 'recovery' from the autism spectrum and goes on to point out that the ASDs are not 'curable' therefore is most likely a result of misdiagnose.
