Baby is home! Worried about his temperature

Liam David is finally home after a long month and two days!  We are so thrilled and very worried!  We have him swaddled in his crib right now, under our supervision and we took his temperature and he is a little cold.  I don't know what to do, if he's cold now and swaddled, how to keep him warm at night if he won't be swaddled?  I am scared and confused.  please help.

Re: Baby is home! Worried about his temperature

  • We didn't want to swaddle and just had to adjust our thermostat to keep DS comfortable!  It was warmer than we would have liked but gave us peace of mind that he was comfortable.
  • Loading the player...
  • The NICU would double swaddle DS in 2 blankets when he got cold.
  • does he have a hat on?

and ditto the double swaddle...or swaddle with a blanket that is toasty from the dryer (but make sure it isn't SO hot it will hurt him)

  • Madison's temp was low the first night. Are you using a armpit thermometer? That is useally one degree lower, so 97.6 is OK. I had the AC off the first couple days, thicker PJ's, and a swaddle I was so nervous, then she started crying cause she was hot!

You'll get the hang of it, don't worry  :)

  • We checked DD's temp just like the nurses did for those first few days with DD home.  Don't worry!  Like the pedi told me, "You will never dress your baby into a fever."  Easier said than done, right? :)

  • Layering helps.  They also make sleep sacks he can sleep in as well as socks and hats.

  • First off congrats!

When we took our IUGR baby boy home they said: dress, hat, socks, warm home, and double swaddle.  I really thought he was going to die of heat stroke but it really was what he needed.  When I would check his temp he was normal as could be.

  • I didn't think we'd ever keep Robbie warm. We did layers. He always wore a long sleeved onesie & socks under a fleece footed sleeper. Then a hat. At night, we'd double swaddle and then put a sleep sack over the top of that. Plus we kept the house at 80 and kept a space heater going near him. That would keep him in the normal range Fortunately when he hit about 6lb (he came home at 4 1/2) he got way better and by 8lb, he was warm all the time. Now he's a little sweat box.
  • I agree with everything above and it may make you feel better to check the temp every now and then.  We had body temp issues with DS and after 1 trip to the ER for low temp, I was totally freaked out for the first month until his temp leveled out.  DS wore a hat basically until he hit is original due date.
  • I love the sleep sacks and they come in preemie size and the zipper is at the bottom.  It works great if there are still cords.  Our son came home on oxygen and a monitor...  He is doing fantastic now!!

Good luck and enjoy having your baby at home!!!
