Is the mini pill not as effective as the traditional pill because it has less margin for error in terms of missing a dose or because it simply doesn't do as good of a job preventing pg even with perfect use??
its a use issue. I'm a pharmacist and they really do have the same efficacy, it's just with the mini pill you HAVE to take it at about the same time everyday or you lose quite a bit of protection.

they have the same theoretical efficacy as Combination OCs but in practice they are less effective due to dosing. with POPs, you have only ~3 hr window vs 12+ hr window for COCs. that's b/c the progestin peaks in the body at 2 hrs after dosing, and falls to near zero at 24 hrs. At the progestin dose of POPs the primary mechanism is alteration of cervical mucus to create a more hostile environment for conception. 40-60% of patients still ovulate on them.
