High-Risk Pregnancy

Spent the night in L&D...

& it sucked. I call my OB at 2pm yesterday after peeing a massive amount of blood & contraction that were every 5-6 min. I was sent straight to L&D, after being checking and hooked up to all the monitors. It turned out to be PTL Crying. I was watched all night, & had cervical checks every few hours. I was not given anything to stop the contractions, only because my cervix was not changing. I was released this morning still having contraction every 5-6min, but with no cervical change the OB's & Peri's said that it would be ok to go home. I'm on even stricter bed rest then before. The contractions hurt really bad, but I was told when they become unbearable & are every 3-4 min to head back to L&D. I really want to make it another 5 weeks, but its not looking like I will make that..

Stay Hydrated,Rest & keep LO cooking as long as possible are my orders.... I'm in need of some inspiration, any one have any?

Re: Spent the night in L&D...

  • Wow!  I can't believe they didn't try to stop the contractions at all with meds.  Did you get steroid shots for your baby's  lungs just in case it turns into real contractions? If not, I'd ask about this. I had pre-term contractions with my 1st pg around 29-31 wks and my contractions were every 5-6 min and they gave me meds to stop them and they never ended up causing dialation or real labor.  Sometimes people just have what they call an 'irritable uterus".  With my DD, she turned breech and then all the contractions went away.  This led to a c/s later but at least she stayed in and kept cooking.  Good luck to you!

  • I got the Steroid shots at 24 weeks & will get another round next week. They said that they are real contractions ( i wish it was an irritable uterus, but the contractions are too intense), but if the cervix is not opening then they do not see a need to stop them. I can take Tylenol, but that has not helped at all. I'm on the P17 shots (which the peri's think is why my cervix is not changing with the contractions) & will continue to get them till 36 weeks if I can make it that long.
  • I am so sorry you are going through this.  PTL absolutely sucks.  I have been contracting since 33 weeks when I hit 3 cm, but the contractions have done nothing since then (I was put on meds due to the dilation, and I had a round of steroids-- sent home on strict bedrest until 35 weeks, modified to 36, now I am free).  I am really glad you are not progressing, but I hate that you are dealing with the constant contractions.  It is really frustrating to try and figure out when to go to l and d and when to just chalk things up to your stupid uterus being crazy and harmless.  I'll say a prayer things chill out for you.

  • I had PTL with DS since 23 weeks and had to be hospitalized several times to stop it, made it to 38 weeks! Good luck:).....I did receive the steriod shots and was also on Procardia.
  • oh, and I did have cervical changes with the contractions as I also had an incompetent cervix and needed an emergent cerclage as my cervix was super short with funneling.

You can make it another 5 weeks! Just don't move:) and drink lots and lots of water....

  • Arrgh!  Darn uterus!  Hang in there dear!  For the record, I don't have any words of wisdom, but I can offer stupid humor (just don't laugh too hard).

In the wise words of Dory from Finding Nemo, "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming...."

Ok, yeah, that wasn't as funny as I thought it was going to be.  DOH!

  • I'm sorry you are going thru this....like a PP said "PTL sucks".  My story is summarized in my blog...I had issues with PTL and an incompetent cervix starting at 20 weeks.  I was in and out of the hospital and unfortunately had intense contractions for weeks before I had J.  My labor was stopped multiple times and I was on loads of meds and on bedrest for 17 weeks.

You will have that internal battle thinking to yourself you would rather have a preemie than spend one more minute contracting and I want you to know that those feelings are normal and okay!  Do not beat yourself up like I did when I was going thru it.

Here is where I totally broke down

    https://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/18902187.aspx

The things that helped me included:

propping my butt up on a pillow to try to keep the pressure of his head off of my cervix.

    drink water water water!!!

Laying the the bathtub, even if it meant taking 10 baths a day and during the night.  I don't know how many times I would get into the bathtub before bedtime, twice during the night and then again in the morning, then before lunch, after lunch and 2 more times before dinner.  I am not joking, that was the only place I found relief.

Practice your breathing techniques now, it is amazing how much they help even though you are not in true labor.

Hang in there, although I wanted to hurt the people who would say this to me, "it is totally worth it" in the end.  Good luck!

  • Oh I'm so sorry!  I spent the night there as well, this is my second, first was born at 34w1d, after being in and out of L&D and admitted twice and hooked up to mag.

I would call your doctor, and ask why they didn't try to give you anything to stop the contractions, especially if they are painful, and tell them you want something to stop them...  Not only did I get trebutaline shots both Wed, and last night, last night I was sent home with procardia...I am very surprised they didn't try to stop the contractions....
