nope, not a waste IMO. i got an itsy ritsy one from mamabargins.com and really like it. it is really nicely padded, doubles as a highchair cover for restaurants and has ring loops to attach toy onto. the floppy seat was the other ccover i was considering b/c it has a built in bag that allows you to carry it, but i wasn't a fan of the prints as much (stupid, i know).

I can attest to the fabulous quality of these covers because it outlasted DS and all his spills, crumbs, wear and tear and LOTS of washes in the washing machine. She's got super cute fabrics to choose from. DEFINITELY not a waste at all! Well worth the $!

We have the floppy seat....love it! It can be used on the shopping cart and highchairs. And it folds into itself and has handles for easy storage and carrying it around.
