Newborn and Fitted vs Prefold

Hi all.  I am pretty new to the cloth world.  I just switched DS who is 2 over to cloth full time and really LOVE the BG's 3.0's.

I realize the one size's probably wont fit the new baby due to arrive in January, but I wanted to see if anyone reccomend a similar system of diaper for a NB.

I have 4 Kissaluvs size 0 ( I know, not nearly enough but I'm slowly building up my stash so its not such a financial shock).

I like the ease of the AIO or Pocket diapers and wondered if there were any good ones out there for NB's.  I don't mind buying more KL's I just wondered if there were other brands or types out there.

I thought about prefolds but they seem really bulky.. am I wrong?  I've never seen a prefold on a baby IRL so I dont know!

Thanks!

Re: Newborn and Fitted vs Prefold

  • Here's a pic of my newborn in a prefold and Thirsties Duo cover.  I guess it's a bit bulky, but I love the cute fluffy butt.  I haven't used anything but pfs and covers yet, though I do have a bunch of fitteds and pockets to try.  I was under the impression that pfs and covers were the trimmest option out there.

  • i now use bgs, but i used a combo of gmd orange edged pfs and kl0s for the first 2-3 months (just switched over 3 weeks ago to pockets...but still use kl0s some).

I would say that the pfs were just as, or less bulky than the kl0s.  i also had some thirsties aios which i liked for the nb stage, and one bg aio, which I thought was pretty small, and it leaked (not sure why).

my dh loved the kl0s, and i actually preferred the pfs.   I do like the pocket diapers for their absorbancy, but my lo pooped so much, i had to change every 1-2 hrs anyways... and pfs are super easy laundering as well

  • I would actually say that fitteds are generally bulkier than prefolds overall although it depends on what size prefold you're using and some fitteds are trimmer than others. But if you're going for ease of use - then fitteds are going to be easier than prefolds because they're going to be closer to using a pocket but with the extra step of putting a cover on over it.

  • Right now I'm using prefolds and  KL0s.  I think the prefolds are easy enough, just learn different folding technics.  I like the jelly roll, it contains newborn poop well, took a while to fold it properly though.

  • I think you should definitely try a few PFs to decide if you like them.  We hated them for the first few days (as we were learning how to get the fold just exactly right), but now they're our favorites!  Our stash includes 2 BG AIOs, 3 KL0s, and a handful of Thirsties fab fitteds.  DH doesn't think the fab fitteds and KL0s fit DS very well and doesn't think the BGs are absorbent enough.

  • xs BG AIO would fit a newborn but not sure how absorbant they are...we got a few just for ease while we are out.
