my son's head shape seems to be changing

When my son was born several weeks ago, his head had very defined fontanelles.  Over the past few weeks his head has gotten much rounder.  Tonight at the NICU I noticed one side of his head had a more defined ridge in it and the nurse said babies heads can change up until they are two years.  I am still really worried.  Does anyone know if this is in fact normal for their heads to change a lot like this?

  • Oh yes, it is VERY normal, in fact it would be bad if his head wasn't malleable (it would indicate the sutures were closing too early).

After he comes home, you can position him in different ways to help his little head round out.  :-)

ditto - early closure of the sutures can be a huge problem, so changing is good and normal.
