30 weekers- when did they come home?

Just out of curiosity, if you had your baby around 30 weeks, how long did they stay in the hospital? My nurses keep telling me all they can guess is his due date, but I know they also don't want to get my hopes up.  I am having a hard time imagining not having my baby for 9 more weeks, and am just curious when everyone else was allowed to have an at-home baby.

 TIA!

  • She came home right before 37w, after 50 days in the hospital :)

  • DS is a 32-weeker and came home after 27 days.
  • They always told us their due date too because they don't want to get your hopes up when alot can change quickly.  Ours came home at 35 and 36 weeks.  They were born at 30w3d and Nathan came home 5 weeks later.  Joey was there because of desats a week longer.

  • stella was a 29 weeker and came home after 89 days in the nicu at about 42 weeks.
  • 32 weeker came home in 23 days.

  • It really does depend on the kid. My bigger, stronger twin was home after 5 weeks, my smaller twin took awhile longer to stop having spells and get off oxygen, and he was home exactly 8 weeks after they were born.
  • My 28 weeker came home at 41weeks, after 91 days in the NICU.
  • Ella was born 30w 4d at 2 lb 5oz.  We were in the hospital for 68 days.  Ella came home 2 days after her due date.  She kept having spells.  I think she was on the 5 day spell cound 3 times.

  • I know you are excited to get him home but there is no really good way to compare one preemie to another> each has their own issues and they will vary from child to child and situation to situation. I had 31 weekers, and they did great were home in no time, my best friend had 32 weekers and they did not fair so well, were in the hospital much longer and had many more issues.
  • We were never told the due date thing - when my 32wkr was born they told us to expect to stay 4-6wks unless there were complications.  We stayed exactly 30 days...the last week of which was only because we couldn't get him to eat enough via bottle at every feeding.
  • It really depends on birth weight and what kind of issues your LO is having. My twins were born at 30w0d at 2lbs 12oz and 2lbs 6oz. They had a lot of issues with their lungs, and aside from that had bradies and PDAs ... but otherwise no major issues. They came home at 37w0d amd 3703d. If your LOs doesn't develop any major issues, there is a very good chance he'll be home before his due date.
  • I hate reading these things.  Makes me feel so so sad & jealous that most/all of you got your LOs home before their due dates & Stella was there 2 weeks past her due date. :(  PP is right though--you really can't compare NICU stays since everyone has their own issues.  Hang in there!

I figured as much, and I also figured that people ask this stuff all the time. I ask more out of curiosity, since I know that my nurses can only tell me the worst case, which is his due date or later. I am trying to prepare myself for this, but right now I am also just looking for some hope. We had pretty much no idea that we would be having a preemie, and so I am just looking for any and all information, and trying to prepare for the best and worst case scenarios.

  • My twins were 32 weekers and spent 31 days in the NICU. But they also were smaller than yours, had more oxygen support and took a lot longer to bottle feed. I bet your little guy will be home before his due date! He will just need to grow so he can regulate his own temp and also not have any As and Bs. They told me the due date thing but I just kept thinking/hoping that would be closer to 36 weeks, which it ended up being. Good luck!

  • Ben was born at 29 weeks (2lb 2oz) and spent 49 days in the nicu. His main issues were growing, learning to maintain his body temperature and eating. We too were told around his due date but it ended up being 36 weeks. Every baby is different though.
  • Mine were born 29w6d and stayed 5 weeks exactly.  They told us our due date also, but that didn't happen.  They were ready but we still had apnea monitors at home because we delt with a few spells at the hospital.
  • My 30 weeker came home after 44 days in the NICU (6w 2d old). She didn't have any major issues... PDA closed, some jaundice, needed to grow & feed.

Like the PPs said, no two preemies are the same (look at our dear Stella's longer journey), so don't focus too much on numbers. Once my Savy got into an open bed, her feeding tube came out within a few days and a few more after that she was home. I found it was easier to focus on those kind of milestones. Good luck!

  • I can echo that no two babies are alike.  My twins were born at 30w1d.  Twin A came home after 49 days and Twin B came home after 100 days in the NICU!  So, even twins are not alike!
  • My Cooper was also born at 30 weeks @ 3 lbs 8 ozs. He was in the hospital for 5 weeks and 1 day! Hope however long your baby is in it goes fast and baby is nice and healthy when he comes home!! Good Luck!!!!!
  • It is very hard to know :( I never asked when Kevin was in the NICU because I was scared of getting my hopes set on a certain date. He was born at 30w5d and came home after 53 days. His issues were holding body temp, getting off oxygen and learning the whole suck, swallow thing :) Hoping for an uneventful and shortened NICU stay for you.
