Preemies

Introducing Myself and Birth story

Hello! I am a new mommy of a preemie. Here is my birth story (XP'ed from 3rd tri):

I had a my weekly appointment on Monday- the doctor had ordered I come in every week for NSTs, to monitor the baby since I was hospitalized for pregnancy induced hypertension a few weeks earlier. Everything looked fine, my BP was normal, and Cooper was being as uncooperative as ever, but his heart beat was fantastic.

Tuesday, my BP started to go up. I attributed it to stress with work and school, and decided just to put myself in bed after class on Wednesday, since my day ended at 1:15.

My BP continued to go up on Wednesday- I got home, and it was really high, around 170/105.  I thought maybe my monitor was off, so I had DH check his when he got home. His was normal. I decided to wait and see if I could get it to go down, since I had no other symptoms that anything was wrong, and my BP tends to fluctuate a lot (this was around 8:30).  I stayed in bed, until around 9:15, when I went down stairs to get a snack.  I started to get a mild headache, took 2 sips of milk and ate a cookie, and started throwing up.  My headache instantly got worse- the worst I have ever had, I tried to take my BP, and it was over 200/150- I don't remember the exact numbers. I threw a few things in my bag, and told DH we needed to go to the hospital.

We got there within 15 minutes (it usually takes 35)- all I remember from the ride there was screaming because my head hurt so badly- and I don't usually complain about pain. Triage was a blur- all I remember is them taking my BP, and telling me they needed to get my baby out right away. After I signed a ton of consent forms, they performed a C-section, and had him out of me at 11:57 pm. DH got to stay with him while he was checked into the NICU, and our pastor came to pray over him. I got to see him for the first time (other than right after my c-section), on Thursday afternoon.

It was very scary, but I am so thankful that my doctor sent me to the hospital two weeks before- otherwise I may not have realized how serious the situation was.

I have been off the Magnesium they were giving me (not fun!) since yesterday afternoon, and am feeling a lot better. I was able to hold Cooper for the first time last night, and that also helped stimulate my colostrum. Hopefully I will be able to supply him with milk, but he has already taken formula from a bottle! He is hooked up to all kinds of wires (hence the helmet-looking thing), and is very feisty. He likes to let the nurses know when he is uncomfortable. He has the beginnings of his daddy's curly blonde hair. We are so in love, and just praying for growth and healing every day.

Thank you for reading!

  • Congratulations, he's a cutie!!

This is a great board, please feel freel to ask any questions, brag on your adorable son, or vent.

My kids were 30 weekers, and their 2nd birthday is a month away. They are doing really well now - walking, talking, getting into trouble like normal 2 year olds.

  • Congratulations and welcome to our board!

  • Congrats on your adorable little boy!  Hope your NICU stay is short and uneventful!
  • Congrats!  I hope your LO is home with you soon!
  • Aw, sweetheart you really had quite the event didn't you?  Cooper is gorgeous and it's great to see he's only on a CPAP since you didn't have time for the steriod shots.  Take it one day at a time and everything will be fine. Try to live in the moment, that's what I did.  Seriously I wanted to crawl into a hole and die when our LO came at 31w due to HELLP.

I did not experience the hell you went thru, my BP was steady high for a few weeks but it wasn't bothering me and I didn't have any other Pre-e symptoms.  My platelets dropped gradually over the last week of bedrest until we couldn't put off delivery any longer if I wanted to have a chance at being awake for the birth.  We were lucky we chose the day Laura was born even if it was sooner than we wanted.

  • Congrats on your beautiful DS!!!! He is so cute! And WOW I am amazed that he already drank from a bottle! Also only on CPAP, thats awesome. I forsee a short NICU stay!!!

Also, I wanted to say I am sorry that things did not go the way you thought they would. I know I was devastated after my twins came early. And my DS was on a vent for 2 days (even though I got steroids) and it took them awhile to learn to nipple feed. It sucks big time and its not fair but at least your DS is healthy and doing so well. Hang in there and take care of yourself these next few weeks!
