how do you handle these kinds of comments?

dh and i own a restaurant, and one of our regulars told me "you look huuuuuge" a few weeks ago. tonight dh was working and in went in to drop something off. that guy was there, and i was standing behind something, so he says "let me see" (obviously referring to my belly). i say no and try to blow him off. he kept staring at me with this smirk on his face making me more and more uncomfortable. i couldn't leave because i was waiting on dh to give him something. he kept pushing it, "let me see", "let me see". to shut him up i let him see for just a second sarcastically. then he says again, "you look huuuuuge". i say "thanks, you already made that clear". so i was turning beat red, obviously fuming.

so i give dh his medicine, and leave. his wife and family was sitting right there and said nothing!!!!!!

how do you handle rude comments like this? am i too sensitive?

Re: how do you handle these kinds of comments?

  • oh man! i dont know. i think would have done the same thing as you....but that really is an awkward situation.

Im sorry, i would also feel a little viloated.

  • I would have refused to let him see me to the point where he looked awkward and then given him a curt smile when I left.  I am really good at being a biotch when I need to be.  I am only 4'11 so people often treat me like a child but I got my annoying co-workers on a short leash right from the beginning.

  • unfortunately i think you have to ignore it
i have a co-worker who is 2 weeks farther than me and EVERY DAY someone that i work with tells me how huge i am and how un-huge she is
it gets very tiring, but you have a healthy baby in there so you just have to be happy for that and let people be stupid, its their nature

In front of everyone, my cousin made a comment that I was getting "huge" too. My response was: "Hey - so are you! But I'm pregnant, what's your excuse?".

He's always been a jerk and maybe I'm being sensitive, but I know I hardly look pregnant.

oooh that's a good one! i'll use that for next time, because i have a feeling he'll make it clear just how huge he thinks i am again.

  • I agree with ignoring it or making light of the situation. By your story you could tell he was just trying to grind your gears anyway.

Screw him! his wife probably didn't say anything because he is a lost cause. lol

People are going to say things for the rest of your pregnancy, don't let it work you up too much.

Sorry he made you feel so huge but the PP is right! You have a healthy baby inside and that's all that matters.

i didn't think of it that way. he probably was just trying to get to me. because i'm not huge. someone actually called me tiny the other day. i'm normal size with a normal sized baby. oh well.

  • I would have shot him the finger and said "see that okay?"

    But I am a b!tch.

  • I would've said, so at least I have an excuse what's yours?

Love this!  I'll be using it in the future.

  • that sucks. i think if he can already sense that yo are uncomfortable, try and prove him wrong by just showing that person (although, he sounds super creepy!) and laugh and smile. he'll stop bugging you. he only keeps saying that because he knows it gets under your skin. good luck!
  • Honestly, I would just cry, so you handled it way better than I would've!! ?People are such assholes!!!

  • I would have said or done something but then again I'm kind of sarcastic that way.

  • I must be one of the few pregnant women on earth that just doesn't get bothered by those comments. My belly is huge, and I'm proud of it.
