Babies: 0 - 3 Months

those of you that were induced (non-emergency): FFFC & WDYT? (kinda long)

I want to be induced on the 19th. That's 5 days before my due date....

My reasons:

*My OB doesn't really let people go past their due date anyways...

*I had a really easy induction with the baby I lost (at 31 weeks.)

*We have my stepson on weekends so if I got induced on Monday the 19th I would be home by the weekend & we wouldn't have to deal with finding someone to watch him if I went into labor on the weekend.

*I had an growth ultrasound today & LO is measuring 6lbs 11oz (I know this can be off...) & the tech said she can gain up to a pound a week which would put her at 8lbs 11oz at 39 weeks!

*My due date has been moved from the 29th (LMP) to the 20th (my 18 wk ultrasound) to the 24th (my 27 wk ultrasound.)

WDYT? No flames please... If you are totally against induction then just don't respond.

TIA.

My head hurts reading the post, but none of the reasons seem to be a really good reason to induce. Ultrasounds can be off all the time. I had a 8lb 12oz baby, Dr thought was going to be around 7-7.5lbs!

    GL though!

  • I was induced, twice, with my DD. the first time failed because she just wasn't ready. The second time, it was successful after 20 something hours of labor. I was induced both times for medical complications.

I believe your LO will come when he/she wants too and just because it's convienent doesn't make it right, medical issues are another reason, IMO.

  • Inductions are harder when your body is not ready. Trust me, I went through hell and still had a c section. I was 40 1/2 weeks with almost no progress. If you want to have the baby on a Monday, why not wait that extra week and asked to be induced on the 26th? I'm sure your doctor would allow 2 days late. It would also give the baby a little more time to grow. The est weight doesnt sound that big to me and your LO will very likely lose weight that first week. I'm not against inductions, but I don't see the point in rushing things either.

  • Just let baby come on her own.  Enjoy what little time you have left of being just you two.  Enjoy the sleep (I want you to remember that).  I know you're anxious, but appreciate the time you have left.  I was excited too.  You want to meet that LO and see what they look like.  You'll hate yourself if LO wasn't ready though.

Due dates should be measured early on...when they change it later on they are not accurate.  Those few days, plus the 5 days earlier that you want to induce can make a huge difference.

    Just wait.

ETA:  Doctors just don't do inductions.  You usually have to have a reason and your cervix has to be "ripe" (of course if there's an emergency, then they go ahead for sure).

  • I had a successful induction just last week due to history of macrosomia...so I may be biased.  I say if your body if favorable for induction (ie, good Bishop score)...go for it!  I was nervous about mine, because of the horror stories that I've read on here.  I decided that if people have bad birth experience with the induction, they usually blame it on being induced.  I took my chances and had a great experience.  Pitocin started at 8 a.m. and have DS at 3:55 p.m.  Totally uneventful...and wonderful.
  • I say, if your OB goes for it, then do it! I made my OB promise me she'd induce by 39 weeks because I was scared of the risks that you face when you reach term/post-dates (i.e. cord compression due to less amniotic fluid, big baby...DD was always measuring big, risk of meconium aspiration, etc.). And the OB agreed with me. Ironically enough, I was induced 2 days before my induction date when DD's HR dropped during a contraction on an NST...I was 0cm, and after 12 hours of cervadil, however many hours of pitocin (24 hours total), I had a c/section, but not because DD wasn't ready, but because her shoulders were stuck on my pelvic bone. So I think your reasons are valid, but be prepared that you may end up with a c/section.

  • Why doesn't your OB let you go past 39w? Dates can be off by a few weeks.

Don't trust those growth ultrasounds. Mine was off by a pound a half.

Make the decision for YOU. My theory: if baby is fine, why force the induction when it leads to a higher c/s rate? For the record, I waited until 41w5d and ended up with a c/s, but like the pp, my DD got stuck. Her nose was so crooked from being pushed against my pelvis. Induction earlier wouldn't have mattered.

  • I think you should embrace the beauty of the unknown when it comes to giving birth. :)

FWIW, my last u/s at 41w2d measured the baby to be at 8lbs 15oz.  DS was 8lb 5oz when he was actually born at 41w6d.

  • I was induced 3 days after my due date because my OBGYN didn't want me to carry the baby too far past 40 weeks. The big issue I had with the induction was that the pitocin contractions were hard on my baby. His heart rate fell off the monitor twice--very scary. As a result, I ended up with a c-section. It seems like it's not uncommon for induced births to end in c-sections, so that's a factor to consider when you're making your decision. Also, at my 30 week ultrasound, it looked like I was going to have a 9 lb baby if I carried him to his due date. He was born 3 days later and weighed 7 lbs, 11 oz. However, I was TERRIFIED of delivering a massive baby and I don't blame you at all for wanting to minimize the threat:)

  • Honestly, I have done both. I went into labor on my own for the fist LO, and then for #2 I was induced (also for no good reason, but more of convenience) The induction went ok, but I really wish I had waited and went into to labor on my own for #2. I can't explain why, but it just seemed smoother bc that is when the baby was ready.
  • So many inductions end up in C sections when your body is not ready for the birth.  I would really wait to try to start labor natually.

  • If your doc will let you and it's what you really want, I say go for it.  I was induced 4 days early.  Pitocin started at 5am and baby was born at 2:44pm.  Not bad compared to other stories I have heard.  They induced me because LO was large for gestational age...he ended up being 8lbs 9 ozs and tore me up really bad!
  • Go for it.  I chose to be induced a week early because I didn't want my baby to be born in September (#1 because of school cutoff and #2 because we have like 23 birthdays in September)

    This is perfect advice. Sincerely.

  • they told me when i got induced that the process would take 4-5 days.

    i had him in 2.5

    breakdown of my labor?:

weds afternoon- pitocin to see how Ry would react to contractions

thursday and friday- cervadill to soften my cervix. by 530 friday night i was 3 centimeters diilated. she broke my water then at 6 they started the pitocin. by 8:00 i was begging for my epidural. 8-9 centimeters at 10:30. 10:43 Rylen was born :):):):)

i say, if they let you induce. DO IT! the contractions are worse but its worth it. i lost my son at fullterm a year and a half ago and if they didnt induce when they did i wouldve lost rylen too.

    :(

  • I was induced at 36w6d due to water breaking.  Baby was NO WHERE near being ready.  He had not even dropped yet.  I was on pictocin for 20 hours! with the level being up'ed every hour.  Baby never dropped, I never progressed (dialation and effacement) and ended up with e-c/s.  Even with and epi, I experienced the worst pains of my life.  So if baby is not ready, it could potentially be rough.
  • What do I think?  I'll say this in the nicest way possible.

I think your reasons aren't reason enough to induce.

As for size, lots of women deliver 8lbs+ with no problem.

  • I would never induce for the reasons you have listed. Your baby will come when it is ready and I think it is risky to induce just because you want to.

I was induced at 42w and my body (and baby) were not ready at all. It was pure hell.

The estimates on his weight were also way off. They said he was under 7lbs...turn out he was 8lbs8oz.
