Hi ladies! Sorry I've been a stranger, but life has been crazy!!
I may have to have my gall bladder removed, but I wanted to hear about your experiences - whether you had yours removed or didn't decide to.
I met w/a surgeon today & he made me a little nervous about NOT getting it removed b/c it could get worse when I get pg again (not planning to TTC for about a year).
My mom cautioned that a lot of surgeons just "like to cut people open" & that a surgery like this could cause me to not be able to conceive...? Not sure I believe that, but obviously something I'm going to research further.
I'm going for my annual w/my OB in about 2 weeks, so I will discuss this w/her as well, & of course I'll be googling like a crazy woman, but I'd like to see what you all have to share. TIA!
Re: Gall bladder issues?
I had gall bladder issues at 15 weeks with my now-13 week old. I went to the ER because I was in a lot of pain in my abdomen and my back and, long story short, they did an ultrasound and found out that my gall bladder had essentially died, and was getting infected/gangrene. Gross, I know.
So 8 hours later, I was having surgery to have it removed. Mine was very necessary. It actually runs in my family. My grandma, mom, and I have all had to have ours removed. It's not something to take lightly, I was told.
I wasn't told anything about having difficutly conceiving again. I was also pregnant when I had it removed--I was told that there was a 15.30% chance that it would abort the baby (which I was told about 10 seconds before I was put out--lovely!!) Obviously it turned out fine for me, and I hope it does for you as well!!
I am a SAL-er but I just happened to see this post and I can share my story. I had gall bladder issues a little over a year ago before TTC. They did an ultrasound and saw a couple of stones in the gall bladder and some thickening of the wall. I was in quite a bit of pain every time I ate. So the surgeon took out the gall bladder laproscopically (sp?) and it was a pretty quick recovery. I felt sore for maybe 4-5 days.
The doc said he was initially not sure whether I absolutely needed to have it out, but he was really happy I had surgery because in the end, my gall bladder was really inflamed.
After my surgery I was able to have a completely normal diet- no restrictions. My pain went away completely. And it did not affect TTC at all. In fact, birth control pills may have been a factor in causing the gall bladder probs in the first place.
Thats my story. It never hurts to get a second opinion before surgery though. So do what you are comfortable with.
