DD loves her paci, and her ped. is very anti-paci. He says if she is sucking a paci she will just swallow air and it will give her gas. She does have gas issues but we started giving her the paci BECAUSE of the gas issues - I was concerned she was breathing in too much air by crying and the paci was the only thing that could calm her down.
Anyway I try to only give her the paci at night (which is her fussiest time) but she sleeps with it in so it's basically in her mouth for 10 hours straight (minus the two or so times she wakes up to eat). But sometimes she seems to need it during the day too. I feel like the paci is in her mouth at least half the day, but I also feel like she is still very young and I don't need to start the weaning process yet.
Re: How often does LO use a paci?
I wouldn't worry about it now.
DD only takes the paci in her carseat when she's tired and in the house when she's really, really tired. Once she falls asleep, she spits it out.
The paci soothes my DS so he has it in his mouth a lot. My DS had gas issues but is now taking probiotics and he is a different baby now. You should look into that.
Now my problem with the paci is that I have to replace it in his mouth throughout the night. I wish he would just sleep through it falling out but he doesn't.
S = maybe 45 mins - an hour out of the day, usually before naps.
J = about 30 mins total
Probably half of the day. If he's busy having fun it's out of his mouth, but if he's just relaxing or playing with his activity gym, then it's in his mouth all the time. He goes to bed with it and naps with it, but once it falls out he's fine to be without it.
FWIW...I have never had an issue with gas. Never.
