Our top girl choice right now is Elodie. Neither my DH nor I have any French heritage. Is it weird to use an obviously French name just because we like it?

IMO it might only bother people who are French or very into being French-American. I'm 2nd generation Irish-American and my heritage is a huge part of me. When I meet people with a tradtional Irish name I always ask about it & their connection to Ireland (oh, where is your family from?). When the parents tell me they just liked the name & have no connection to Ireland I kind of give them the side-eye. I feel like they are diluting the Irishness of the name.
totally fine. I'm 100% Belgian, first generation in the US, and I would never be bothered by something like that. If anything, I would just think what a beautiful name they chose..

We used an Irish name and while I ahve a LITTLE Irish on my side, in no way are we "Irish" to a degree that people are like "Oh- fo course you used that name!". Esp paired w/ Dh's Jewish last name. :-)

My mother and I both have French names, and there isn't even a hint of French heritage in our family lines... I think Elodie is a BEAUTIFUL name (and MUCH easier to pronounce than mine or my mother's ;-) )!
It doesn't bother me, but then again, I want to name our girl a Hawaiian name and neither DH or I are Hawaiian. DH thinks it would be weird and that the child would get lots of questions about why she has a name that she's not "born into" so to speak.
We don't have a drop of French between the two of us, but Elodie was one of our front-runners for a LONG time. We ended up going with something we liked just a little better, but I think Elodie is a gorgeous name! I especially love that it's not common. I say go for it!

i think that is ridiculous and immature. anyone should be able to appreciate a beautiful name regardless of their heritage.
I don't think it's weird...really like the name too.

Re: Ok to use a French name if we're not?
I don't think it's weird.
I was named an Irish name & my parent were definitely not irish
I think it's fine!
My parents are Italian immigrants thus making me 100% Italian. I know Italian heritage and history better than American history.
Yet I have the most American first name ever.
I am NOT ever offended when people have Italian first names, and they aren't Italian. Who cares? People name their kids ethnic names all of the time.
