Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Moms of a 4 month old.....

DD is taking (5)  6-7oz bottles a day.

She has had a terrible cold. Brought her to Doc and he asked if her eating had changed...told him no because it hadn't at the time.. And then it slowly started to get worse and worse.

For example, yesterday she only had 4 bottles.... one 6 ounce and the other three she only ate about 4-5 ounces!!! Our daycare lady told me she went from 10am-4:15pm with no bottle. She said she wouldnt take it. She also has been sleeping non-stop and going to bed at 7:30pm and sleeping until I wake her at 6:30am.

Do you think its just b/c of her cold? or would you be concerned? we have an appt on monday...

Re: Moms of a 4 month old.....

  • It could be her cold, if she has any drainage in her tummy it could reduce her appetite, just like it would for an adult.  Definitely ask her pedi though.  Watch for dehydration, if you think she's not eating enough, our pedi told us we could mix formula into Pedialyte to help keep up electrolites.

  • I would be concerned and I would keep an eye on it.....but I wouldn't be sick with worry.  Keeping in mind this is only an internet stranger's opinion and that you should totally be talking to your pedi about this, I would suggest letting her sleep as much as she wants and keep offering her food when she's awake.  I know that when I'm sick w/a  cold (or w/anything) all I want to do is sleep and my appetite suffers a bit.  She needs to rest.  But do keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn't get dehydrated.  And please stay in touch with your pedi.

  • The change in behavior is probably caused by her being sick.  I would call the pedi, just to get their opinion, and see whether they want you to bring her in.  My prediction is that what they will tell you is as long as she's not dehydrated (meaning, as long as she gets 4-5 very wet diapers per day), they'll have you keep your appointment on Monday.  The concern with them not eating much is dehydration, plain and simple.

  • My DD is normally drinking the same amount as your.  WE also just went through colds in our household last week and the same thing happened.  She decreased her drinking to half of her normal intake and sjhe was going longer periods without drinking.  As of yesterday she was back up to her normal amount b/c she is feeling so uch better.

If you already have an appoinment booked then it never hurts to have things checked out but IMO it's probably just from the cold.
