3rd Trimester

Am I the only one that hates ultrasounds?

I had my 18 week ultrasound and everything was good except they couldn't get a good picture of all four chambers of the heart.  I went for another one last week and found out that one (or both) of the kidneys was enlarged.  I was having a bath with my son when the midwife called so I'm not clear on all the details - I do have an appointment on Monday to clear it up.  I now have to go for another ultrasound on the 23rd.

Seeing the baby is nice and everything but honestly, I have to lay there for 30 - 45 mins, get poked and prodded all while having a full bladder.  See the baby for approx 2 mins at the end.  Figure out how to actually get off of the table when they are done with sciatic nerve issues and I have to arrange child care.  I'd go everyday for the health of this baby, but it doesn't mean I have to like it Stick out tongue

Re: Am I the only one that hates ultrasounds?

  • I absolutley LOVE ultrasounds!! I have only had 2 my whole pregnancy in the doc's office and we have paid for a 3D one!

I would love to get one every appointment if I could! Smile

This. Just tonight, I was telling DH how I wished we could get another u/s. The last time I saw LO was at our 18w1d anatomy scan and he was only partially cooperative so we didn't get to see a profile shot or a straight-on picture of his face, since his hands were in the way!

I do understand where you're coming from though- if I had been told that there were several concerns with my LO after my ultrasounds, I wouldn't be a big fan either!

  • I'll admit I love seeing the baby, but I will also say that I dont like laying there for so long and getting a sort of nauseated feeling, and it's boring for 30-45 minutes, unless we get to see the u/s screen :)

  • Why do you only get to see the baby for 2 minutes at the end of the ultrasound?? I love having ultrasounds, and I get to watch the entire time....I'm confused as to why you get to see the baby for such a short about of time. However, I do agree with you about the full bladder part, that is torture!!
  • Personally they make me completely anxious. Waiting to hear that everything is ok makes me nuts. I have had more than I can count b/c I had some spotting early on and now low lying placenta.

Gosh amen to this part! Those tables are soooo uncomfortable, not to mention that you can't even get up once you're done. Ugh!

I do love sonograms. Why do you only see them for the last 2 minutes?

  • It's just the way the room is set up.  I remember with DS I got to watch the whole thing.  With this baby I guess things have changes.  I can sort of almost see the screen but not quite.  I suppose I could ask them to move it but I'd rather they were able to do their job as effectively as possible.
  • Just wanted to let you know that the enlarged kidney is probably nothing to get too concerned about.  They noticed that at my 18 week ultrasound as well, and it's apparently very common.  In a lot of cases it is something that resolves itself.  In more severe cases, the child will have to have surgery to correct it (unfortunately that's the case for my little guy), but even with the surgery, the child will likely regain some use of the kidney, and you really only need one to live a happy normal life.  I will warn you though that if it is still there when you go back in for your next ultrasound they will keep an eye on it - I had ultrasounds every 2-3 weeks throughout my pregnancy.  But to answer your question, I never got tired of them!  We did get to see the screen the whole time though.

(And I hope this post reassures you and you don't get hung up on the possibility of suregery - MUCH more likely that it will resolve itself!  The technical term is pylectasis for mild enlargement - my son has "severe hydronephrosis" if you want to do some reseaech on it, but don't let the web freak you out!)

  • You need to go to an ultrasound place that let's you watch the whole time.  Ours had a big TV on the ceiling, so as I was laying there getting prodded and poked I was also watching the baby.  We got some really cute views with hand in mouth and a little yawn or gulp..

  • Forgot to mention - with my ultrasounds after 18 weeks, they always had me EMPTY my bladder first...
  • My Dr.s office just moved and the new ultra sound room has a flat screen up on the wall that you can see when your lying there.  It shows everything the ultra-sound tech. sees on the monitor.

What a difference between this ultra-sound and the last one that made! The last time, I got to lay there and be poked and proded, and my hubby got to see the baby swimming around the whole time. By the time I got to see the monitor, baby girl was curled up and snoozing again, and we had a hard time seeing anything.

This time I got to see everything!
