Hi! I was diagnosed with PCOS yesterday and my RE would like me to start on Metformin. What are the s/e? How long does it take for them to go away? I think she wants to start me at 1000mg
Well everyone reacts differently. For me, there were GI issues at first. I had stomach cramps and had to go to the bathroom a lot. I have to avoid greasy food at all costs. Now, I still get nauseous a lot but the other issues aren't as bad. I also always have a headache but do not know if that is from the met, clomid or all the stress I carry around. Are you IR as well? Hope you don't have as many s/e the met works for you!

I've been on metformin for a month now. Taking 1500mg per day. This last week has been the worst so far. Constant bloating, diarrhea, nausea and gas. It sucks but I'm hoping it will get better soon.
My IVF twins born at 33w6days by c-section due to twin A being IUGR
Rylan born at 2:54pm weighing 2lb 8oz, 14.5 inches
Emma born at 2:55pm weighing 5lb 5oz, 18 inches
I've been on it at 2500 mg for a few months now and I still randomly get sick from it. For me it isn't certain foods or anything...just really weird. Good luck!
I was on 1000mg of metformin. GI issues are the norm. For me, they never really went away, but perhaps as a result, it helped me be a bit more conscious of what I was eating. I learned to stay away from the worst triggers - pasta, pizza... For some reason, salads were a big offender as well. Don't know why. GL!

I was diagnosed a few weeks ago and my RE is planning to hold off on Metformin for now. I have mild IBS and we were both concerned that my GI side effects would be even worse than usual. Luckily, I passed my glucose test this week so I don't think he will even consider it now.
I already has a history of IBS when I started taking Metformin almost three months ago. Strangely enough, it has only made things better for me. My stomach has been behaving wonderfully lately. I switched back over to a vegetarian diet about three weeks ago and that also has helped quite a bit. This is just my experience -- I realize I'm probably a freak and that most people do have side effects that are unpleasant. Good luck!
I have to go for blood work tomorrow to determine if I am IR. My RE said she really thinks that I am and wants to get the meds started. She said she is going to let us try for 4-6 months and then we will start thinking about Clomid. I also need to take Provera because she wants me to have a period at least once every 3 months. On met- would following a low carb diet help?
I have been on Met for a month and I am now at 1500 mg, and I have to tell you, I have been sick the entire time. I don't necessarily go or not go to the bathroom more, but I am constantly nauseated. I have found that eating wiht food is key, stay away from alcohol (not drinking wine kills me PS) and stay away from lots of carbs. Ginger ale and saltines have helped me too, but I figure all of this is getting me ready for morning sickness. Plus, I finally got my period all on my own for the first time in 11 months, so far so good

My ob told me that low carb was best for IR but I know others on here who have done others things like just avoiding greasy food. If you do low carb, don't do high fat. Stick to lean meats and whole wheat breads. Good luck!

i was super sick to my stomach with the met... i started taking it with dinner and was able to sleep through the worst of the naseua. and i agree with staying away from greasy/fried foods
This is such a helpful post for me as my Endo just started me on 2000mg Met yesterday. Had my first dose last night and so far so good, but I'm now I'm a little anxious to see how the next few weeks will go after reading responses. The only s/e I'm hoping for is weight loss.
