Anyone have to give LO breathing treatments?

DS hates the mask I have to put up to his face for his breathing treatments. I have to give them to him every four hours right now and I dread it! He completely freaks out.

Anyone else have to do this at some point? I wish I could figure out how to make it not so scary...

Re: Anyone have to give LO breathing treatments?

  • can you pretend to put it up to your face too and smile and laugh to make it look fun?

  • yes! you're not alone!

Here's my trick.  We stick his paci IN the mask and once he latches onto to the paci we slip the tie around his head.  Does he hate it? yes.  But he HAS TO HAVE IT!  Sometimes we even have to hold his hands down.

Thankfully he's only down to one at night.  What meds is  your LO on?

  • I am a Peds RN and unfortunately I don't have any little tricks for you to make it better!  There is a teddy bear with the nebulizer in it that may help when he gets a little older, or sometimes we put the tube inside a styrafoam cup and put chapstick that smells good inside the cup to get them to smell the cup.  At this age though, they all hate it!  Hang in there!

He's taking albuterol. I tried just putting it on but he swats it away and kicks. He picked up a bit of a temper from his mommy Embarrassed

I've tried singing and playing with it. He'll go about 3 minutes like this before he realizes that he's being tortured.

Nic- why is your DS taking breathing treatments? M has bronchitis and the pedi says he will most likely have asthma down the road.

  • He was born with Premature Lung Disease bc he was early.  He was wheezing the first few weeks of life and even though he rarely wheezes now, we are trying to prevent future issues.

I also have lung problems, so I know all about pretty much everything related.  Abuterol is a strong one.  Does he get jittery afterwards?

Try the paci in the mask.  A lot of times DS fights for the first few minutes and then falls asleep because the machines noise is soothing to him.

  • We have to give DS 2 different breathing treatments at least twice a day. We have a pacifier attachment that works pretty well. We sit him in his bumbo chair and let him watch a Baby Einstein video. This is the only way that he doesn't scream through the treatments. It is so hard. Really hope we don't have to do them for too long. :(
