Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Scariest moment of my life!

My LO is a very loud sleeper, always making grunting or other noises. He started wheezng so I went over to check on him and realized he was trying to spit up but nothing was coming out. I quickly picked him up and he was bright red wheezing and making faces like he was trying to throw up but he couldnt! I patted his back hard and finally he coughed and started sputtering. It made me realize - what the hell do I do if he chokes??? By the time I call someone it would be too late. So freaked out. I dont think ill sleep fully for the rest of my life now..

Re: Scariest moment of my life!

  • Oliver used to choke on his saliva all the time, he still does it at 4 months old but not as much.  I still don't sleep fully, in fact Isabelle is 3 so I'm pretty sure I haven't sleep soundly for the past 3 years.

  • I would mention this to your pedi. i think any breathing issue during sleep warrants attention.
  • Sorry that happened. Maybe look into taking an Infant CPR class. They will also teach you what to do for choking.
  • Knowing baby cpr helps, but it's still scary.  My sister is an er nurse and still panicked when my nephew was a few months old and choked.

  • Have you thought about taking an infant safety class at the Red Cross or something?  I had to take professional level CPR and first aid courses last year and I'm very glad that I have that knowledge now. Granted when DD did this a couple weeks back, I still had a second of panic. It's very, very different when it's your own baby!
  • I highly reccomend learning how to perfrom infant CPR just in case anything were to happen. I can imagine how scary that was for you.
  • That's so scary! DD did that int he hospital. I jumped out of the bed to get the suction and cleared her throat. I keep a suction in all rooms of the house now even though I haven't had to use one since then.

  • Oh, that is scary! I really want to take a CPR class. I would have no clue what to do either.

  • I agree with PP, you should take an infant CPR class - they cover choking.  DH and I took one at the Red Cross and it wasn't very expensive.  But also let your doctor know what happened.

I would mention it for sure.

  • Mine used to do it. I would wake up constantly checking on him. It has passed since then. When you see the Dr ask him what do in the situation. they can show you what to do.
