3rd Trimester

Are you taking your own bottles to the hospital?

I plan on EBF and pumping, I'm taking my pump so the lactation consultant can show me how to use it. But should I pack his bottles? we have a couple breastflow and avent bottles, and then of course the medela ones that are coming with my pump.

Would you take them? in case they need to give LO something extra?

Re: Are you taking your own bottles to the hospital?

  • If you are EBF they suggest against giving LO bottles until they are 3 weeks old or so

If LO needs something as a supplement, they will provide the bottle

  • I didn't even think of that one .I'm planning on breastfeeding and it never crossed my mind. Thanks!
  • According to my BFing instructor, the amount of milk you produce in the first few days is not even close to being able to fill a bottle.  Your milk takes a few days to fully come in anyway.  Also, PP is correct that if you EBF you shouldn't be introducing a bottle until 3-4 weeks anyway.
  • You probably wont have any milk tp really pump at the hospital, just colostrum...save the space, leave the bottles at home!

This is exactly what I have heard.

  • I wouldn't even take the pump to the hospital. There's not much to pump until your milk comes in, and you'll want to put the baby to the breast as often as possible. Besides, what's there to learn in terms of using the pump? I'm scratching my head over that one.

I had trouble getting DD to latch at first, and as it was during the night, the LC wasn't on duty. In desperation, I begged for a bottle. The nurse brought me the ready to drink formula bottles where you just remove the lid and screw on the nipple. Super easy.  Oh, and yes, we did manage to get a latch established, even though we supplemented with bottles of both EBM and formula for the first week.
