I am not doing Hypnobirthing, but I am doing the Hypnobabies home study course. I looked into it and a lot of people said that it is more comprehensive than Hypnobirthing, plus it's cheaper and I don't have to figure out childcare every week for the classes.
I'm finishing up week 2 tomorrow and so far I love it. I can already feel myself getting better and relaxing and focusing. I figure even if it doesn't "work" during labor, taking time out of every day to relax is great for me.
I asked my OB/midwives what they thought about it. My OB actually used it for her children and loves it. Both the midwives I've spoken to say it's a great tool, and that they see a definite difference between people who use it and people who don't. The main thing to remember is that you get out of it what you put in. You really have to commit to doing the tapes every day if you want to see results (or so I'm told). We'll see how it works in about 9 weeks here!
I wish I could do it but I don't want to pay for the classes or Hypno for babies home study course. I am reading Birthing from Within and doing a prenatal Yoga DVD. It does some breathing and meditation exercises and I plan on taking the Bradley courses farther down the road. Hopefully that will get me through a natural child birth.
My midwife recommended this to me and she said that the women she sees who have done that course are generally more relaxed and seem to cope with labor better.
I bought the book and am planning to take classes later in the pregnancy. I really want to have a natural birth and I'm the type to believe that it is possible to mentally control the pain response, so I think it's a good fit for me.
Even if you don't want a fully natural birth, I would recommend it. At least reading the book. Author's name is Mongan. It's not so much about being hypnotized as about learning to focus and relax. I started taking the course when I was PG with DD but she came three weeks early so I didn't get to finish. But the little I took helped me get to 6 cm before the epi and then she came really quickly cause I was relaxed in general. I tell you to take it even if you're planning on an epi b/c sometimes they don't work all that great. It also helps you remember not to be scared of the process b/c that really freaks some women out and they don't get far.
2 babies, no drugs, amazing and short labor experiences... i really feel its all because of what i learned and practiced through hypnobirthing. if you decide to take the class, i believe it is much more effective if you use a hypnotherapist who does hypnobirthing as opposed to a hypnobirthing instructor.
although someone said something about it being a great tool for learning to relax, a huge element of hypnobirthing that I believe to be beneficial are the "fear release" excercises done in class. And when you work with a real hypnotherapist, they can do this more effectively. The relaxing part is very important as well...
