Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

No more STTN. Nightmares at 15 months?

When do kids start having bad dreams?  DS has been STTN great for months now.

For the past week, he'll sleep for 2-4 hours, then wake up SCREAMING and flipping out.  It takes us forever to get him back down.  Once we do, he usually STTN.

Anyone else experience a sleep regression like this?  I don't really think it's teething.  He calms down as soon as we walk in the room and starts flipping out again when we leave.

  • Separation Anxiety maybe?

DS had a stretch like that around 13 months, but he wouldn't calm down for anything.  He would cry and cry even if we were holding him...still have no idea what was going on.

  • I vote separation anxiety too. M has nights like that. Eventually she goes back to sleep, but she'd much rather I be in the room with her.
  • yep. right at 15 months.  lasted 2 weeks, and then she went back to sleeping better than ever!  Hang in there!
  • DS is 19 months old and he has been waking at night for the past week.  I think he is having nightmares because he will wake up crying and saying "light" and he won't calm down until we turn on the light.  He was sleeping great up until now.  Poor babies!
  • I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but we're going on almost two months (yes, I said months) of this.  He has all of his teeth but his 2 year molars, and I can't see them coming in...so best we can figure is that it's night terrors.  I talked to the pedi and she basically said the same thing.

The only way he'll go back to sleep is to put him in bed with us.  Some nights, he'll go back to sleep quickly and others he'll toss and turn and stare at me for anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours.  I am frigging exhausted and long for the day when he finally starts STTN again.

I agree that maybe it's night terrors. Here is an article I came across today as we are going through the same thing right now. Good luck.

  • DS has had night terrors off and on since he was 13 months.  He screams out and cries in his sleep, but doesn't really ever wake up.

We tried waking him up one night and that was a disaster, it took over 4 hours to calm him down.  We also tried just rubbing his back, but that didn't work.  So, now I just go in his room, change him if he needs it (he still usually doens't totally wake up) and rock him until he's calm again.  Singing a little helps, too.
