What does DH do all day?

Before some jumps all over me, I know it is not easy being home with the LO all day. DH is a SAHD while he looks for a job and I work 9-11 hours a day, plus commute time. I call DH on my way home and just like every other day, he asks me what's for dinner.

Tomorrow he is meeting with a recruiter about a job. Great. He called the babysitter. This is where he seems to have stoped. It's 8:30pm and he is just sitting on the couch. He remembers he has this meeting tomorrow and decides he wants to look over a few things tonight. I ask him if his clothes are ready. Nope. Is the diaper bag ready? Nope.

He did nothing around the apartment today. When I got home, I fed DS, gave him his bath and put him to bed. In that time, Dh washed the dishes (which I am glad he did).

I didn't say anything, but I really want to ask him what he does all day.

  • There are days I wonder the same about my DH....

  • Why didn't you say anything? I think you should.

I SAH and I know that some days are tougher than others, esp. if you have errands or the LO has activities that day, but I think he should be doing dinner at least some nights. It sounds like you are doing more than your fair share. Even when he does go back to working out of the home, he should still be contributing to caring for the home and your DC, imo.

Maybe he is a little depressed from being home so much? Maybe he has lost motivation and needs a "pep talk." :)

  • Probably spent quality time with your son instead of cleaning.

I used to spend WAY too much of my "SAHM" time cleaning, laundry, etc. and realized that I was staying home to be with my DD...so those other things do not matter to me as much any more. Some nights DH has to go pick up dinner because I was just too busy enjoying my little girl. He has no problem with it.

I don't expect things to be white-glove clean, not by any means. But would it be too much for him to decide on dinner and do one or two chores around the house during the day? It takes him all week, if not longer, to wash/dry/fold and put away laundry.

  • Me and DH had a serious conversation about dividing the chores. I let him do everything I do one day and he crumbled. So now we make a to-do list and divide everything equally. It may not work for everyone but it works for us so maybe you can try that.
