Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

I NEED to stop worrying...

I NEED to stop worrying...but I can't. I'm worried that DD doesn't say any words. I'm worried that she's not really walking or standing on her own yet.

I'm worried that at her next pediatric urologist appt. they are going to say she needs surgery but then I'm also worried they'll say she doesn't need surgery and to stay on antibiotics another year.

I'm worried that she hasn't been going to the bathroom regularly for a few months and we have to give her Mirelax and suppositories and she's in pain and cries when she goes to the bathroom.

I'm usually pretty laid back about all these things, especially meeting milestones. I just can't get the nagging feeling of worry out of my head. I hate when people asking me if she's walking or talking. I feel like I have to make up excuses. I hate when all my coworkers who have kids the same age tell me their kids are starting to say the alphabet and are running all over. It makes me sad.

  • Saying the alphabet at 15 months? Not common. And, there have been several LO's on this board who did not walk at 15 months.

I wouldn't worry too much yet about the talking either as long as she is engaging and interacting socially w/ people. But of course, see what your Dr says as well. Maybe they could have her evaluated for speech just to make sure? Again, though, I have heard of plenty of toddlers that are not talking much at 15 months. I think DS' biggest "word explosion" was between 16-19 months.

I think you have a right to be concerned about chronic constipation and antibiotics and surgery though. I am sure that is stressful. I know nothing about any of those 3 things, but I hope she gets better soon! Does she have allergies?

  • Thanks for your response. I know she is still within the average time frame for talking and walking. It's so hard not to feel worried at this point. 12 months passed, then 13, then 14...I kept trying not to worry. I spoke to the Dr. today about walking and he said that if she's not walking by her 16 months appt. we would talk about physical therapy.

As far as talking she is super social. Laughing, smiling and babbling to everyone. She will literally let anyone hold her and just loves people and other kids.

She breaks out when she eats eggs and hummus so we tried to stay away from those two things. Have you heard that allergies can cause constipation?

I really don't know too much about allergies and/or constipation but I have  friend whose DS has excema and milk allergies and he had a lot of constipation issues for a while. I haven't spoken to her about it lately though.

  • ds didn't walk until he was 15 months, didn't even attempt it until then, now he won't sit still.  He only had a few words then too, his vocab has exploded recently, no alphabet though.  I would try really hard not to worry.

  • I can't relate to the constipation worries, but, my DS isn't walking either (15 months next week).  He didn't start crawling until 11.5 months either.  He pulls up and easily cruises along anything, he just started standing up w/o pulling up on something within the last couple days, so maybe one of these days he'll just take off - I hope so - cause I worry too!

DS isn't saying many (if any) words, pretty much mama and dada and shakes his head no (but doesn't say it).  He will sign "milk", but only if I ask him if he wants milk.  Sometimes he'll sign his version of "all done" too.

Pedi said not to worry about walking unless he's not doing it at 18 months, we haven't talked about the words though - our last appt was at 12 months and we don't go back until 18 now.

GL - know you aren't alone in your worries - this mama is right there w/ you!
