Success after IF

whew! now he won't get sick!

DS and I were at Walgreens today and having him in the ring sling got a lot of attention (usually does in my neighborhood).  One Walgreens employee kept saying how cute he was and how she loved his little head poking out of the sling, getting closer and closer with every comment.  She finally said "I just have to touch him - I don't want him to get sick!"  So she cuddles him a little bit and then said "there, he won't get sick now!".  Umm...huh?  I'm ok with strangers touching (I'm in the germs provide immunity camp) but how does touching my kid make him LESS likely to get sick?  Weird.

About a month ago I had another woman have to see him so "he would be healthy".  (He was asleep in the carrier with a blanket over it.)  So strange!

Is this some cultural thing I'm unaware of?

  • That is very strange.  I am of the same school of thought as you...exposure to germs = immunity to germs

Only way a body builds immunity is to be exposed, but I did not know cuddles did it too

  • that is odd!!  but funny!

  • weird.  I am constantly amazed at all of the stories of strangers touching people's babies.  When we are at the store with DS we keep the sunshade in the carseat pulled as low as possible over him (DH calls it a "sneeze guard"), but I'm sure someone is going to get grabby soon.
  • It is a cultural thing.  My DH is of latin heritage.  He and his entire family do this with babies.  They believe that if they look at a baby and think they are cute that they must touch them to take away the evil eye.  I honestly don't get it, but they all swear it's true.  Each one has a different story about a baby being at a party and coming home to get sick later in the evening.  They call everyone at the party and find out who didn't touch the baby.  Whoever didn't touch the baby then comes over, touches the baby and instantly the baby is healthy again.  I think there are several cultures that do this.  It is very common here in Texas.  I don't have a problem with it as long as they have clean hands.  I have never allowed strangers to do this though, only family or friends.  HTH!
