Do you wake your babies at night?

My girls were 35 weekers who I started feeding every 3 hours when they were in the NICU and we'd wake them up b/c we needed them to gain weight.  They now eat VERY well and pretty much wake up when needed to eat and are gaining well (Addison gained 10 ounces in 1 week!)  I EBF also.  In the last week or so we've started letting them go about 4 hours at nighttime which they also usually wake up on their own but I do set my alarm to wake them up.  My question is, if they are sound asleep would you still wake them up to eat or let them eat on their cure?  We've had 2 nights that they are sound asleep and look so cute and comfortable that I hate to wake them, but I hate for them to miss a feeding.  In your opinions is it bad to go longer than 4 hours or should I keep waking them if they're not awake?  Thanks!

Re: Do you wake your babies at night?

  • If your ticker is right you need to keep waking them up and I would consider going back to every three hours. I had to wake mine up till they were about three months old.

  • most docs will say once they have regained and passed their birth weight you don't need to wake at night... though, most babies will still wake approx every 3 hours for many weeks.  We stopped waking at night around 3 weeks... they were STTN by 8w.
  • DD was so-so about waking up every 3 hours, once her brother came home at 4 weeks, we stopped waking to eat. They stretched it to 3.5 hours and around 6/7 weeks they were sleeping 5 hours at night.

  • We woke them up every 3 for the first 2 weeks, then our pedi said that we could wake every 4 b/c they were past their birthweight. That pretty much got us through the night.
  • Since we've been home I haven't woken them up in the night, they usually wake at the 4 hour mark anyways, but they have gone past it.

  • I wouldn't wake them. As long as they are eating well during the day, get the sleep while you can I say. We only woke them to eat for the first 2 weeks and that is because my smaller twin lost almost a pound after birth (she was a horrible latcher and I had to end up supplementing). Once she started gaining again, I stopped waking her to eat. Now I did wake the other one when the first one woke up to keep them on the same schedule. I did this until they were about 9 weeks old and I could tell the bigger twin could go longer then we started each taking a baby for the night and only got up to feed the baby we were assigned.

  • Thanks ladies for the advice...they are 3 weeks and have regained their birth weight...I guess there still so many opinions out there.  So hard being a mommy!!
  • Our twins were born at 36w0d and our pedi had us wake them at night until about a month old.  Then we were allowed to let them sleep a longer stretch in the middle of the night, but still had to wake them every 3 hours during the day.  By 9 weeks old they were STTN and our pedi was fine with that.
After 20 months TTC with PCOS, we were blessed with twins!
They arrived at 36 weeks after PTL and bedrest for 14 weeks. Lilypie Third Birthday tickers image
