Caution: bad pet owner in post

Ok ladies, give it to me straight. We have a three year old Boxer mix who is a happy, and full of energy dog. That being said, he is naughty. He runs away, and needs tons of space to get his energy out. He does stuff to get attention like destroying a scarf I was making, getting in to the trash ect. He has anxiety, and is not a good cage candidate. (injures himself to get out, ect)

Today, he RAN through new sidewalk that was poured on our block.... We will probably owe the city for that one. We are at our wits end, and do not knwo what else to do.

He gets daily walks, we have hired a trainer, worked with him, been nice, been mean... Nothing seems to affect him!

He is not aggressive, is housebroken, neutered, and up to date on vaccinations. Am I a terrible dog mom if I surrender him to animal control? It is no-kill, and has a 50.00 fee to drop him off.

Please tell me what you think.

Re: Caution: bad pet owner in post

  • I had to do this (with a Boxer mix as well) b/c she suddenly became aggressive on top of the out of control chewing and everything else.  She was adopted quickly, to a home with no other dogs and no kids.  I do not think you are a bad pet mom for this.

  • I had to do it too but with my 2 cats.  As soon as DS came on the scene they peed on everything but especially his stuff.  Had them at the vet. Nothing physically wrong with either of them they just objected to him being around.  That and they started tearing up my sofas, curtains and everything else shredable.

It wasn't an easy decision but it was one we had to make. We surrendered them back to the organisation we got them from and they were placed with a family with 2 older kids within 2 weeks.  I still get updates every so often and they are doing very well.

My only option was to lock them in a bathroom when I couldn't be around to watch them ( which I couldn't do ) or to give them the opportunity to find a home where they could get the attention they needed.

Some people might disagree with what I did but it was the best decision for us and for them.

  • Did you feel like you could never own a dog again after? We are not thinking any time in the next few years, but maybe down the road!

Yes.  I still feel so crap about it.  I feel like I don't deserve any other pets since I couldn't deal with the ones I had.    Part of it is that I was always brought up to believe that when you have a pet it is part of the family till it dies.  People in my family make provision for pets in their will FSS.  They are not expendable or there to send away when the going gets tough.

DH wants to get a dog.  Not any time soon but waaaay down the road when we actually have a yard :)  I am dead set against it.  Maybe it's my way of punishing myself for what happened with my cats.

  • You totally have my sympathy!  My two cats will never recover from the addition of Bone Jr.  They spray in the house.  They hiss at the him and generally keep their distance.  I won't share my whole cat saga because it will just make me angry, but I am SO OVER pet ownership!  After they pass on I think we will be on a very, very , very long hiatus from pets.  I have thought about rehousing them.  But who is going to take an 11 and 9 year cats who pee in the house?  This situation of deciding to keep your pet fortunately not as bad as IF decisions, but can we catch a break for pete's sake?

  • I personally couldn't.  That is just me.  Now would you be horrible, no.   None of you who have are horrible... these things do happen and I don't think ya'll are being careless.

If you could actually place him in a new good home (like through CL) that might be better.  W/all the unemployment and foreclosures shelters are overrun and even no-kill shelters are beyond limits.  Anything you could do to place the animal would be a good thing.  I know my mom got her German Shepard by one of her collegues sending out a mass email (dog didn't adjust to a new baby).  Zahara, never spent a day in a shelter.  It was a good deal for all.
