When does your pedi okay peanuts?

Ours says not until age 3!

We are trying to give DS more of our food- but if there are any peanuts or peanut-products in it (aka Thai food), we are steering clear for now.

Re: When does your pedi okay peanuts?

  • He said at least 2...but he would prefer never.

  • No restrictions after age one, except for obvious choking hazards.  So, peanuts themselves are out, but we've been giving peanut butter and food cooked with peanuts since about 14 months.
  • she said DD could eat anything at 9 months.
  • our pedi okay peanut butter at age 1 and DD 1 LOVES it...
  • Ditto Tess.  We've been giving peanut butter since shortly after her first birthday but not peanuts.
  • We introduced peanuts at about 12 months.  We introduced shell fish just before a year.

After doing my own research, I decided that there was no reason to withhold any of the foods we eat from DS.

I did go against my pedi's recommendation, but I do that often as my pedi is very old school.

  • Maybe things are different here in Canada but we were given the okay for peanuts, shellfish and treenuts at her 1 year. She loves peanut butter, has had nutella with her daddy, and is a huge fan of all kinds of seafood. Of course until she is past the choking hazard age she will not be getting peanuts/tree nuts whole, but otherwise everything else is okay

  • Allergy wise, after a year nothing was off limits.  But choking hazard wise, the pedi said to be careful of peanuts, popcorn, hard candy, hot dogs, and large globs of peanut butter.  I give DD thinly spread peanut butter on bread, and peanuts and other nuts if the are ground or finely chopped.  The most recent research suggests that if you have no history of allergies in your family, there is no benefit to delaying introduction of peanuts (and there may be some benefit to earlier introduction).

  • We did peanut butter just the other day.  (11 months).

  • Our new pedi also said 3. It was a shock to me since our old one said 1 year. I am choosing to ignore the new pedi's advice on this since I had already given my son a little peanut butter by the time we had his appointment.
