Morristown or Livingston hospital?

Does anyone know if Morristown is better than St Barnabas in Livingston?

Also, is anyone's OB Dr Quartell in Livingston? Comments are welcome!

TIA!

Re: Morristown or Livingston hospital?

  • Tell us more about what would make one hospital better than the other for you... low intervention rates, or a highly technological birth?  NICU or low-risk oriented?

Morristown Memorial's C-Section rates are 41.5% overall and 25.1% for first time moms

St. Barnabas (the highest in NJ) is 49.3% overall and 29.2 for first time moms

The episiotomy rate for Morristown Memorial is 34.4% and is 26.4% for St. Barnabas

The hospital and its policies are an important part of the intervention rates- the most important thing is that you and your care provider are philosophically alligned.

  • Where did you locate the C-section rates. I had tried to find those rates for NJ hospitals a few weeks ago and all I could find was 2006 rates for c-sections overall, not for first time mothers

  • Wow! Thanks...I am interested in all of that! I would also love to know how you found that out. Thanks so much!
  • my doctor is at both overlook and st. barnabas..he said if the baby has any complications or issues i should deliver at st. barnabas they have a much better pediatrics section..
  • I am delivering at Morristown.  It is the top hospital in NJ, particularly for its NeoNatal unit.  There is some rating system, which my doctor told me about but I forget it... it has to do with the number of doctors on the floor and the different types of doctors there as well as their capabilities.  So I would say Morristown, but its really up to your OB.  My OB only delivers at Morristown.
  • I don't know about the ratings, but I delivered my daughter at Morristown and I had a lovely experience.  There were no complications and the nurses were great!

  • I had DD at St. Barnabas. I had great nurses & my own room. DD got to stay with me all day untill 11pm. The checking out process took forever though!!!!!

  • I have only ever heard great things about Morristown. My pediatrician works out of Somerset but has told us to get straight to Morristown if we ever have a serious issue. I've heard St. Barnabas is good too but if it were my choice I'd go with Morristown without a second thought.
  • if you are concerned about which hospital is best prepared for worst case scenarios, I delivered dd by c-section (she was breach) at morristown.  she was born with a genetic skin condition (ichthyosis) and was put in the NICU for 8 days.  i was glad to be at their NICU.  we felt the drs. were very knowledgable and responsive.  they got us in to a specialist in nyc right away.

  • I plan to deliver at Morristown for the reasons listed above.  In addition, I have had fantastic experiences there, in the ER twice and when my grandmother had heart surgery - it's a fantastic hospital and the staff treat patients really well.  They recently renovated their maternity ward too (I think the last few years, right?) and the private rooms look very nice.
  • I delivered a Morristown in June.  My son was in the NICU for 8 days due to an elevated heart rate.  He was well-cared for and the security in both the NICU and maternity ward are top notch.  I will definitely be delivering any future babies there too.

FWIW, I had an assisted delivery (forceps) after 23+ hours of labor.
