BF: is your LO a snacker??

my DS seems to be grazing my nipples...   he doesn't just dig in like he is actually hungry.  oftentimes this grazing is accompanied by little outbursts of fussiness (he sometimes gets distracted while passing gas).  is 'snacking' normal??  any tips to get LO to only eat when he is ready to stay latched on for a 'real' meal??

Re: BF: is your LO a snacker??

  • Mine is a huge snacker this week I finally just started giving him 20 min a side and taking him off.  Once he realized he had lost his ability to snack he now is a much faster eater.  Dont get me wrong if he acted hungry after I would take him off and put him down we would try again but the act of taking him away from the breast I think made him realize he might miss his opportunity to eat if he didnt eat when he was supposed to.

  • I think it is normal, and mine does the exact same thing. I am interested in seeing the responses b/c I'm not sure how to stop it. I have been trying to get her to eat more when she is hungry so she'll get the good milk. I do that by stroking her cheek when she falls asleep. Sometimes it works, but when she's fussying and crying while eating, that doesn't help. I'm going to a LLL meeting tomorrow to see if they have any suggestions for the crying while eating.

  • DD #2 barely wants to eat 10mins on each side.  I know I have a large milk supply so I don't know if its just that she does not have to work too hard to get what she needs or what but this is totally different than DD #1 I used to have to pry her off after 20 mins.
