Multiples

With multiples....

1) Do you have u/s's more often?  How frequent?

2)  Have any additional testing done?  What is it looking for?

3) Are you considered high risk?

I just found out today that there are 2 but one is very small and viability is questionable although there was a heart flicker at 6w4d.  Will find out more in 2 weeks.

Re: With multiples....

  • 1) I got u/s every two weeks up until week 24.   After that we started going every 4 weeks.

    2) During the first 24 weeks at every u/s they would do an internal one to measure cervix lenght.  Starting in the third trimester I go in twice a week for NSTs (non-stress test)

    3) Yes, all multiple pregnancies are considered high risk according to my Drs.

    Good luck :)

    1) Do you have u/s's more often? yes  How frequent? once every 2-3 weeks

    2)  Have any additional testing done? not if you don't to  What is it looking for?

    3) Are you considered high risk? not necessarily but its always better to go to a high-risk because there are so many complications that COULD arise.

  • 1.) Yes, I've had them every 4 weeks since 8 weeks. I had 3 right away though--the initial u/s my OB did at 8 weeks where we saw twins, another u/s a few days later w/ a tech to confirm twins and then the initial u/s my MFM did a week after that (my first MFM appt.).

2.) I haven't had any additional testing done thus far, just normal genetic screening (if you choose), initial bloodwork, etc. Later on I think there is a greater chance you'll be getting NSTs and BPPs, not necessarily though. I know I'll still get the GD test, GBS test, etc. All normal stuff.

3.) Yes, it's considered high risk as carrying multiple puts you at greater risk for PTL. You'll be assigned to a high risk doctor (perinatologist of Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist).

Congrats on your pregnancy and twins!! I hope all goes well at your next u/s in 2 more weeks!!

  • oh and congratulations!
  • 1) Yes, more u/s. I have one every 4 wks. At 20 wks, I started having more appts. (went every 2 wks for a check-up)--sometimes at those in between visits, if they couldn't pick up both heartbeats, they'd send me to u/s to make sure everything was fine. Starting at 32 wks, I go every week. B/c of certain tests, more u/s are frequent. But only have growth u/s (i.e. they measure your cervix, the babies weights, growth, etc.) every 4 wks.

    2) Yes, additional testing. My peri (I go to an MFM dr. vs. an OB--some women go to both drs. I go to an MFM/ perinatologist only b/c mine happens to deliver multiples) did what's called an NTS (nuchal translucency scan) at about 12 wks. It checks for abnormalties in the babies. Other tests that may differ from a singleton PG are NST (non-stress tests) and/or BPP (biophysical profiles). NST show if you are exp. contrax and monitor the babies heart beats, etc. They didn't start these on me until 33 wks, but I've heard they may start them earlier based on your situation. A BPP measures their amniotic fluid levels, checks their heart beats, umbilical cords, etc. They did one at 32 wks. BPPand/or NST ususally begin in the late 3rd tri. You may also have FFN tests (fetal fibronectin test)--if they feel you have signs of preterm labor or have an infection during your PG, they preform this and it basically helps predict if labor were to occur within the next 2 wks after taking the test. A neg. FFN is a good thing!

    3)  Even though I have had no abnormal complications thus far (knock on wood), I am still termed "high risk" b/c I am carrying multiples. Hence the reason it's a great idea to go see an MFM/ peri during a multiples PG since they specialize in high risk pgs.

  • 1) Yes.  I had an u/s at 6, 8 (found twins), 14, 15, 20, and 23 weeks.  Now my OB/MFM are planning an u/s every 3 weeks for growth scans.  If all goes well, it will remain every 3 weeks.  If evidence of twin-to-twin transfusion is found (since our twins are identical), that will increase.

    2) We didn't do any testing with our singletons.  This time around our MFM suggested an NT scan because it can also indicate possible future risk for twin-to-twin transfusion.

    3) Yes.

  • [1) Do you have u/s's more often?  How frequent?  Yes- very often... i forget exactly how often... but a lot.

    2)  Have any additional testing done?  What is it looking for?  I only had the NST... some have amnio/CVS, but that is optional.  Later in pg most have NST's or BPPs.... they look for growth, organ function, stress, etc.

    3) Are you considered high risk?   This is really semantics- some will say they were not high risk- but in reality all OB's will consider them "more risk"... not necessarily "high".

  • Congrats and welcome to the board. The uncertainty is the worst. I hope the next 2 weeks fly by for you and you have a great next u/s.

    1) Do you have u/s's more often?  How frequent?

Yes. Every 2 weeks. I rotate b/c cervical checks where they quickly check on the babies and growth scans of each baby.

    2)  Have any additional testing done?  What is it looking for?

No additional testing done yet. We didn't do the NT scan or quad screening since we wouldn't do a CVS or an amnio. We met with a genetic counselor and had the anatomy scan.

    3) Are you considered high risk?

Yes. Because it is multiples and I'm 35 yo and I'm at risk for a few complications since I had so many uterine surgeries.

  • 1) Do you have u/s's more often?  How frequent?

Yes. I had a vaginal and an abdominal u/s at every visit through 31w; after that it was just abdominal. (The vaginal were to measure cervical length.)

    2)  Have any additional testing done?  What is it looking for?

Yes. FFNs done starting at 28w. BPPs starting at ... I think it was 30 weeks? I forget. I also had the AFP done I think at 14w.

    3) Are you considered high risk?

    Yes.

Congrats on your twins! Hope you have a happy and healthy 9 months!

  • 1) I get an u/s every two weeks at my peri's office

    2) At each u/s they check the length of my cervix via the u/s. ?So far that is it.

    3) Yes, as far as I know all multiple pregnancies are?

  • 2) I forgot I had a NT scan but I would have done that even with one. ?My peri also sent me for a fetal echo
  • 1) Do you have u/s's more often?  How frequent?

I see my OB every 4 weeks.  I started out seeing my perinatal doc every 4 weeks, but now at 16 weeks started every 2 weeks for cervix checks.  Rumor has it at 32 weeks I can expect to come in 2x/week.

    2)  Have any additional testing done?  What is it looking for?

Early glucose test @ 16 weeks.  Had the Sequential screening (which is normal - U/S & blood work).  Will have level II U/S and a stress test of some sort - not sure beyond that.

    3) Are you considered high risk?

Yes, because of multiples and having undergone infertility treatments.
