Bow Legged ?

My daughter, Ella Claire is 13 months. She is extremely bow legged. Tonight my mom said I need to go see an orthopedist for molds. Anyone heard of such a thing?

Re: Bow Legged ?

  • She might need some type of orthotic to help keep her legs straight so she can walk correctly.  You don't want her gait pattern to be screwy because it can cause unnecessary wear and tear on certain joints, ligaments and tendons.  And having bowed legs probably affect her balance.

If I were you, I would get a referral from your pedi for an pediatric orthopaedic dr.

  • how bow-legged?  did you notice it before your mom said something?  how long has she been walking?  i ask, because my pedi told me that all babies are bowlegged until they are about 2 or 3 and not to let my mom or grandma talk me into thinking that something is wrong with her - apparently there's some sort of old wives tale that walking too early causes our child to be bowlegged - anyway, i would check with your pedi first and see what he/she thinks

My pedi told me the same thing because my MIL told me Buglet was bowlegged.  Labella's right - definitely check with your pedi first to see what he/she recommends.

  • Caleb was very bow-legged until he was around 2. VERY. Everyone I knew told me I needed to take him to a specialist to get them straighted out. I never took him b/c my pedi told me otherwise. Now he walks completely normal :)

I wouldn't even start to be concerned about it at her age.

  • I knew she was extremely bowl egged before anyone said anything. I didn't realize you were supposed to do something about it. I see adults who are bow legged all the time. I just thought that once bow legged, always bow legged :). I'm just going to ask my doctor about it at her next appt. My concern was if they wanted to do something about it, we've already met our extremely high deductible this year. So I would love it if any treatment would fall under this year.
