S/O denying a pregnant woman

The coffee post below got me thinking of other things that people have said about what you should/shouldn't do while pregnant.  What have people - friends, relatives, strangers - said to you that made you want to go off?

My SIL yelled at me for putting salt on my corn on the cob.  And that was the first thing I was even able to stomach all day!

Re: S/O denying a pregnant woman

  • No one has dared do this to me.  I think they know I would kick their a55e5 in an argument.

  • My SIL told me I shouldn't be driving.

  • I usually get lectures about caffeine from random ass strangers in Panera (this has happened more than once). I also got a comment for having a sip o DH's beer at a wedding. I mean come on, a sip or even hell a whole beer is not going to hurt anything.
  • I've been told not to climb on chairs or lift things. Ok, I'm a wimp anyway, so I'm not going to be lifting anything over 20 lbs...I don't think it'll hurt me...??? I know they mean well, so I try to let it go. When ppl offer to do things for me, I just let them. When else in my life will I have ppl falling all over the place to do things for me?

  • most my friends/family have been the opposite. They think I am crazy for some things I don't drink/eat. I am not even overly cautious. I would be drinking coffee if it didn't make me sick, if I want lunch meat I eat it. But I mentioned not even taking a sip of wine, and a friend of mine thinks it is crazy. She had a glass of wine here and there. So I feel your pain, it is just the opposite :)
  • Your SIL is dumb. Unless you have problems with hypertension, some salt is fine. Good, even. You have a lot of extra fluids circulating, and your body can actually use the salt (in moderation, of course.)

  • Noone has said anything this time around!  Last time, in the first tri. of my pregnancy, I was keeping my niece and riding bikes with her and a neighbor called my father and told him that I was riding a bike pregnant.  Come on now, that's ridiculous, calling a grown, married woman's father to tell on her.
  • not any that I can think of. Our neighbor actually brought us a bottle of wine before she knew I was pregnant. When we told her, thank you so much... but we'll not be able to bust into his for another few months. She said, "oh.. a little won't hurt!"  ...I get more things like that.  Um, thanks, but I don't need the temptaion!
  • I can't even imagine getting comments like that.  So far, I've been the one to tell people what a can and can't eat.  I guess all my friends and family feel too clueless about it all to give any advice!

  • Caffeine.  I posted on FB about enjoying a Pepsi.  Apparently when you are pregnant caffeine is the sin of all sins.

Oh yeah, plus coloring my hair and eating twinkies.

  • My mom told me I shouldn't do anything that requires me to put my arms over my head or it would risk tangling the cord.  I told her she was crazy, but I woke up 3 nights in a row with my arms up and it freaked me out.  I called and asked the nurse and she said it is an old wives tale and to not worry about it.

Also, my FIL always askes what I've eaten lately and grills me when it is not "ideal".  Kiss my butt, I am hungry all the time and a million apples don't cut it!!!

Thanks, I needed this today  Cool

I really don't understand where these strangers get the balls to say stuff like that.  I would never say anything.  Hell, I saw a very pregnant woman chain smoking and didn't say anything.  Not my place!

You have no idea how long it took to convince DH to let me have one single piece of his raw sushi.  Sometimes enough is enough!

And for the record, I drink caffeine every day.  It's the one thing that helps with my m/s!

  • My MIL is a ORGANIC FOOD FREAK....she does not eat ANYTHING with MSG or any other bad things in it...(let me remind you, DH and I live with ILs....) so when I bring home McDonald's or when we go grocery shopping and bring home food she doesnt approve of, she will go off about how bad it is! Which I agree..MSG is bad...I'm not gunna lie. But I have been eating it for 22 years now..I think I'll be ok, thanks!

We actually should be adding [a little]  salt to our food since we need iodine and it is not usually found in our vitamins. (Should be iodiozed table salt - I think I spelled it wrong BTW)

On another note - DH has yelled at me for eating too much sweets - he even hide my honey bun from me (I still have not found it - I suspect he ate it).  But - no one else has dared to deny me.

What's wrong with Twinkies?  ::drools::  I can't even remember the last time I had one!  I've got to go get some now!

  • I was actually a little nervous in Starbucks getting a latte after reading about a bumpie who's friend was denied a latte becaues she was pregnant.  I had myself all worked up for a fight to get my latte...but the barista couldn't have cared less.

DH did say the other day after all my pumpkin spice latte talk "there isn't any caffine in that, is there?  I thought you weren't supposed to have caffine?"  Uh, honey, have you not noticed that I make a pot of coffee every morning and there is always one cup misisng?  I've cut way back to 1-2 beverages a day.  (From 10-12 pre-pregnancy...OMG)

  • Thankfully, I haven't really gotten any comments like these. The only ones are from both my grandmas who tell me not to lift heavy things every time I get off the phone with them. I'm not sure why they think I am just randomly lifting heavy things all day lol
  • Mine is more the opposite. I am a vegetarian, have been for 18 years.  I eat a healthy balanced diet, it just doesn't involve chicken, beef, or any other formerly living creature.  My MIL has asked on several occasions how I am getting my protein.  Each time we tell her tat there are a lot of non meat sources of protein out there, including beans, tofu, certain grains, etc., and I have no problems finding them in order to get adequate protein.

  • At my Nutrition class at the birthing center they cautioned us not drink out of any plastic containers with the recycling number of 3, 6, or 9.  They also said to not microwave anything in plastic containers because of the fumes or chemicals that get into the food (I think it's BPA). Anyways I asked her about frozen microwave dinners because I really like the healthy lean cuisines and Amys organic foods and she didn't really support me on it. I was kind of annoyed. I am not a major frozen dinner consumer so I don't plan to take that advice to heart.
  • My boss isn't allowing me to lift heavy things at work anymore, but my heavy lifting consists of lifting bodies - so I'm obliging.

DH gives me a hard time when I drink a Coke. . . I told him at least I'm not snorting it. Wink

And I've gotten the side-eye from co-workers when I have a cup of coffee or a few extra Oreo cookies.  NONE of which have been pregnant before or have kids.  Go figure.

  • My MIL isn't interested in anything baby-related unless it's browbeating me about things I shouldn't be doing.  She constantly asks DH--not me, but him, when she calls him--whether I'm "gaining too much weight."

She's also on this pretty out-there hippie natural-health email newsletter, and is constantly forwarding me articles about how my deodorant is going to give the baby cancer and stuff like that.

My great-aunt posts on my facebook wall or emails me at least 3 times a week to tell me that my hand sanitizer is going to create superbugs that will kill me and the baby.

A friend of ours has been in med school for a grand total of 1 month, and called DH after he found out about the pregnancy to condescendingly tell us why we were doing the wrong thing by declining optional prenatal testing.  Um, thanks, I guess, but a month of med school doesn't qualify you for anything more medically complex than Googling.

The list goes on...I guess people assume that Pregnant = Part of the Collective Human Experience = A Judgmental Free-For-All.

  • DH (and a friend who agrees) think that I shouldn't play volleyball!  He joined a fall league without me, even though they needed another girl on the team.  He's afraid someone will spike the ball at my stomach.

I still get pissed at him every Tuesday when he leaves to play without me.  This is the first league he's ever played without me.  It's the one sport we can play together.

  • I surprisingly, haven't been lectured.. one person at work said "I thought you shouldn't drink coffee?" and that was about it.. heck, most of my friends tell me "you can have a glass of wine, or a sip of beer, it'll be OK" and I politely decline.

My husband used to get on me about salt (pre-pregnancy) but now he knows not to say one word about what I eat because the fact that I even eat now is amazing.. I never had m/s but my appetite is almost non-existent :(

Yesterday at lunch I stopped at Starbucks and got myself a white chocolate mocha and hubby a caramel frapp (he wasn't with me) .. I'm sure I looked insane all fat and pregnant carrying 2 starbucks cups with me the 4 blocks back to the office ;)

  • My MIL can always be counted on for unwanted advice and comments. Grrr. Constantly asking me how I am doing, what I am doing, what did I eat, why is the belly so big, am I standing correctly, are my nipples stimulated enough, etc.

I had some ladies ask me at the office if my OB knew I was drinking coffee. I just smiled and responded "Yep, she also knows I'm armed too."

That's a fun one! I get that, too. I'm vegan, and one of my friends is always trying to get me to eat an egg or two.

  • My coworkers won't let me lift anything.  (As in, I tried to lift 3 binders filled with papers and they all came running.)

I've had several friends and family members panic when I approached a hot tub.  I was not getting in the hot tub!  I was just near it!  I know I can't go in!

Generally, people have been listening to me about how much caffeine I can drink (I am very careful; get half caf, etc.).  If the Starbucks thing happened to me, I would lose it on them.  Oooh, boy...

  • I had my neighbor call me the other day b/c our other neighbor saw me riding on the back of my DH's motorcycle. Neither of them thought I should be on it and felt the need to tell me this... I assured them that I was pefectly safe. When I mentioned it to my OB at my next visit he told me they were ignorant and to ignore them.

When my older brother was born, my mom rode on the back of the motorcycle until 2 weeks overdue!

  • yeah - i got sick of this sh*t too.  SO now i just lie.  yup, you heard me,  I LIE!  If they see me drinking coffee I claim it's decaf, salt on food - I claim that blood pressure was too low and my Ob told me to, etc.  It's easier and somewhat more polite than telling them to F* off!
