On Sunday Henry had a runny nose which we
assumed was due to getting two bottom molars. He wasnt cranky, just had
a runny nose. On Monday morning he woke up wheezing and coughing.
Throughout the day he got lethargic, just laying on me or the floor
starting into space, struggling for breath. We took him to the
peditrician who gave him two nebulizer breathing treatments which didnt
help. He fell asleep in my arms and it was hard to wake him. A normal
toddler takes 20-35 breaths per minute and Henry was taking 65. His
body was working so hard on breathing that he couldnt eat, drink, keep
his eyes open.
The pediatrician then told us that we needed to
get to the hospital, get steroids and that he was considering calling
an ambulance for us. Luckily Henry woke up and responded to me so I was
able to drive him in.
Soon after his liquid steroid (most of
which he threw up) he was ready to run around and play. He quickly
made friends with every sick person in the ER and then every cute
nurse. He got two more breathing treatments which helped, but his
oxygen levels were low enough that they decided to admit him for
observation. At this point it was after 9:30PM, he hadn't eaten a lot
and was VERY tired. They did a chest Xray which looked fine (no
abnormalities in his lungs) and then we waited until around 11 when
they finally had a bed for us. Part of us knew that he was okay and
just wanted to go home but we were glad to have such dedicated doctors
that wanted to be sure that he was okay.
Our night was no fun.
The steroid that Henry had kicked in at about 1AM and he was bouncing
off the wall. Standing on the bed, acting crazy. I tried to nurse him and he bit me, hard, twice. So I couldnt do that anymore. I was afraid that I would fall asleep and he would be awake. I was SO tired. Finally I had to hold
him down to get him to sleep. He was up (bouncing) off and on until
about 6:30AM when he was up for good.
Henry loved all of the
pretty female docs, loved the huge playroom that VT Children's has (and
the 12 different bikes and cars that he rode in). He was such a
trooper!
Final diagnosis.... he had a viral infection that
induced an asthma attack. We didnt know that he had asthma (you cant
test kids until they are much older) but we suspected it. This attack
made the small bronchioles
tubes in his lungs to become inflamed. The steroid and breathing
treatments helped to open these up and let him breath better. Now he
will continue these meds through the winter in hopes of preventing this
from happening again. This could be something that he lives with
forever, or outgrows in a year. We have no idea.
We are all fine, just super tired! Really after being in the Children's Hospital I feel lucky to take home a healthy baby. And I can not say enough about nurses. All nurses. God bless them for taking care of patients and their families!
Here is Henry waiting with his glove balloon in the ER:

Re: Back from a night at the hospital with my Henry :( pip
Poor thing. That is so scary. I'm glad you are home & he is doing better.
DD had bronchiolitis last winter & it was so scary. She was on the breathing treatments 4 times a day. The 1st night I had he sleep on me for fear she'd stop breathing all together.
When they're sick it's never fun.
