we're building a new house and I need to pick my cabinets (and everything else). The builder offers three different shades of oak for cabinets, doors and trim. I'm able to get different cabinets but they are a semi-expensive upgrade.
Anyhow...we want to upgrade the cabinets in the kitchen to cherry. We are planning on it, we just need some reassurance. The thing is, the rest of the wood (doors, trim etc) would not be the same color as the cabinets.
How weird would it be to have those different colors? The guy that is helping us make the decision said that since they are different species it really won't look weird but I'm having a hard time picturing it. I'm kind of leaning against upgrading the cabinets in the bathrooms since there is a door on that room (and the door would be a different stain color than the cabinets) but the kitchen/living/dining area is open and it wouldn't be too obvious except for a wooden railing (picture below).
Also, what color wood/laminate flooring would you use with cherry? I'm normally really good with these things but I'm having such a hard time picturing this.
These pics are the model home so you can get an idea of the layout...

Re: PsIP & questions for you girls that love decorating etc...
My recommendation would be to keep the oak cabinets so it coordinates with the trim and doors in the rest of your house and to get a darker wood/laminate color to anchor the lighter woods in the doors and cabinets. Don't get me wrong...I am a fan of mixing woods, but with an open floor plan like you've got, the difference is going to stick out. There are some lovely darker woods and laminate finishes that would look great with your oak cabinetry.
We also have oak cabinets in our kitchen and we recently installed Bamboo floors. The bamboo has both dark and light grains so it compliments the oak as well as other pieces of furniture we have that are in walnut, cherry, ash, etc. GL!
great point! thank you
