Let's talk pacifiers

OK - for the last 2 nights I've gotten DS to sleep for 5+ hr stretches by soothing him back to sleep versus getting him out o his crib to feed.  I have given him a paci, patted him, even picked him up for a bref time to comfort him and he's gone back to sleep pretty well.

Well I read on kellymom.com that you should not use pacifiers to stretch out time between feedings.

 Is this bad/wrong?

  • my opinion? Do what works for YOU. If he is hungry, a paci won't put him back to sleep, he will let you know! Take your cues from him.Smile
Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! • If he's not hungry, than I see nothing wrong with it. Just make sure you follow his cues if he does seem hungry. Some nights the soothing might work and others he could really be hungry...

  • I would be miserable without the Pacifier.  I truly believe it is the reason I am still able to BF!

If he is truly hungry the paci wont work for long.  If he keeps spitting it out and fussing, he is probably hungry.  Otherwise, he just wants to suck for comfort and the paci is a wonderful thing for that :)

  • When my DS is truly hungry the paci won't cut it.  When he was about your LO's age, we started trying the paci at any night wakings-sometimes it worked and he went right back to sleep, and when he kept spitting it out that meant he was actually hungry.
