Cereal in Bottle and reflux

We recently found out that our LO has reflux, he was in the hospital over the weekend because of it. We have our first follow up appt. on Friday with the pedi, and I want to discuss our options for treating and controlling spit ups. I have seen post about cereal in the bottle helping and wanted to know more about it. Pro's, Con's, etc.,..

 TIA

Re: Cereal in Bottle and reflux

  • We did it over the 4th of July weekend until we could get DD to the Pedi.  It is a very diluted mix and is supposed to make the BM or formula heavier so LO doesn't spit it up.  DD never really had a spit up issue but it did seem to make it heavier so it didn't burn her throat.

We have been on Prevacid since July 6th and it has made such a big difference.  She is like a much happier baby.  We noticed a difference within a day and she was completely like a different baby within 2 weeks.

GL it is to hard to see your LO in pain,

  • Our pedi said no cereal in bottles ever.  We have DD on Zantac and it makes a huge difference.  We also let her sleep in the swing and keep her upright and off of her back which helps too.  Good luck!

  • I would wait until you talk to your pedi about it.  For some reason, I seem to have heard mostly cons but i can't think of the reasons right now.
  • Our pediatrician has us doing 1 tsp per oz of BM or formula. It had decreased, but not completely cured her spitting up. We are also using Zantac. The only con that I can see is that it makes a mess trying to get it into the bottle. It has also helped DD put on weight. She was small at birth and her first few check ups, so the increase in weight isn't concerning to the dr.
