Can we talk sleep training?

I've heard this term used on the Bump, but now that my child is no longer a champion sleeper (the last two months Sad I want to know more.
  • 1. What do you do?
  • 2. Is 8 months too young?

E won't want to sleep unless it's with boob firmly in hand, and wakes up ever 1.5-2 hours to fuss. She used to wake up once to eat and that was it.

Re: Can we talk sleep training?

  • We did Ferber the first time (8 months) that we did sleep training and it worked really well. I recommend reading his book even if you don't agree with his methods. We now do a straight CIO method when DDs sleep habits start to get out of hand simply because going in at intervals just made her cry more.

  • There's a book called "Bed timing" and a blog too that you might want to see/read... it talks about the optimal times for doing changes in sleeping and why there are times when sleep goes to ***.   I'm pretty sure 8-9 months is a peak "goes to ***" time for most people... and a hard time to make changes according to them.   This book came out sometime this past year and my friend said it was really good.

  • We started Ferber a couple weeks ago. It wasn't as bad as I'd feared, though (as you know from my complaining yesterday) we still haven't mastered the nap thing. I want to read the Ferber book to see what he says about naps. If you haven't read it, Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child is worth reading...it's not perfect but I did find quite a bit of helpful info in there. Like anything else, you take what works for you. I don't think 8 months is too young for sleep training, everything I've heard is to wait until they are 5-6 months old, though I know plenty of people have done it earlier. I'm sorry you are dealing with this, I hope it gets better soon! Sleep stuff is so hard.

  • We did Ferber as well.  It was hard at first but we got through it and changes happened very quickly.  Bedtimes are so much easier and more peaceful now.  I think Mikayla was about 10 months when we started it, we could probably have done a little earlier.  I would think 8 months is probably fine to start, I think Ferber says 6 months is the minimum.

  • Here is what I did with Ella (co-sleeping and always nursed her to sleep first)...

I think she woke to nurse at 10, 12, 2, 3, 4, and 6. I wouldn't nurse her for the 10, and hold her and sush, while she squirmed all over fussing and telling me off. If she woke up after 12 I would nurse her. It took a couple of nights and then she wouldn't wake up at 10. Then I dropped the 12 o'clock feeding. The 2,3,4 feeding I dropped all together, not nursing her until after 4. It took about a month of dropping feedings and the habit of nursing and she was *finally* sleeping through the night.

At 10 months she started putting herself to sleep for naps when I laid her down awake, and would consistantly sleep from 9:30-7:30. It all disappeared when we moved and I am starting all over again. Blech.

Although she fussed when we dropped feedings, I don't really consider it CIO, since we were co-sleeping and I was holding her. She cried for 5 minutes at the longest, and even though it was only 5 min - it felt like forever. My mantra was, and still is, that she will get there when she gets there.

I like this.  Sounds like you found something that worked great for your family!  Hopefully Ella will get back on track soon!
