1st Trimester

CP from TTC: I need some support

...or encouragment...or just anything positive tonight.

After having a positive HCG test, I was quite happy (who wouldn't be?).  I know more than I know my own name that the nurse read the result to me as 436.7 on Saturday morning (blood draw on Friday @ 2:00 p.m.).  I was told to come back this morning for a 2nd HCG and a progesterone level.

The CNRP called me about 6:45 tonight ( while I was still @ work) and told me that she was concerned because my level had dropped to 421 from 493.  I told her that I thought it was 436.7, and she kind of argued with me, saying it was written in two different places in my chart what the value was from Friday.  I let that part go, but it didn't make me happy that I was read the wrong results.

Just for kicks & giggles, I took an HPT this morning (before going to have my 2nd blood draw), and it came up a nice, bright positive, only slightly lighter than the control.  I'm 8dpo and did have some spotting (which is why the CNRP ordered the HCG level to start with), but I thought that was implantation spotting.  I even felt a touch queasy this morning.

So, if my LMP date is Sept 2, that makes me at CD26... is there any hope that I'm still pregnant?  The CNRP said this could be blighted ovum.  What I've read so far is that should only be diagnosed by ultrasound.  I have to go back to have another HCG on Wed. morning.

As I have read and it was explained to me, the HCG is supposed to double every 48 hours.  I'm just wondering if because I likely ovulated later than usual this month (seems like this cycle would have been longer if I hadn't gotten a positive HCG test), if perhaps my HCG should be lower right now.  Or maybe there were two and now there's just one??  I'm trying to find any little bit of hope...and trying not to stress for the next 48 hours.

  • wow, it seems you've been through alot! I'm not really familiar with this subject, because with both of my pregnancy's i was already atleast 4 weeks pregnant when i found out! Why dont you ask them for a sonogram since then it will give a visual of whats going on??! good luck & keep us informed!

  • Is it too early for a sonogram?  If my dates are right, I'll be just 4 weeks on Wed.

Seriously can't believe how down in the dumps I am over this...I know it's not official yet, but the CNRP was just so "better luck next time."  Maybe it's her personality, but I guess if you're going to tell someone that there might not be a pregnancy after all that you should be a little kinder.

I just switched practices to this one because when I called my own doc on Friday (concerned about the spotting), the nurse said it wasn't a pressing issue and that the doc could not see OR CALL me until Monday. So, I found someone else to see me on Friday, and it happened to be this CNRP.  Everyone else at the new practice sounds great -- but the CNRP is a no bs kind of person (gathered that when she told me I'm just a vet, not an ob/gyn, and I shouldn't micromanage getting pregnant, i.e. she poo-poo'ed OPKs, temps, charting in general).

  • Something sounds a little off. If you're 8 DPO now, you would have been only 6 when you got a result of 400+? I don't think that's possible.

In any case, it's unfortunately not a good sign to have a beta drop (or not increase). Are they running a third beta?

  • There is no way for them to know it is a blighted ovum unless they do an ultrasound. ?It could be a chemical pregnancy which means you got pregnant, but will get your period just a little later and perhaps heavier than usual. ?Thanks to today's early detection HPTs, we know about these when in the past, we might not have even known that early on, and would really have just thought that we had a heavier period. ?An HPT will still come up positive as long as there is still hCG in your system. ?I know some of them test levels as low as 15-20.

There is, of course, the chance that they screwed up your numbers since there is some discrepancy between your Friday #'s. ?I would go for another blood draw on Wednesday. ?That will be the determining factor. ?Since there is some confusion over what your #'s were to begin with, but you know it is in the 400 range, a third draw would be able to tell you if it has dropped or risen.?

I would def ask for another blood test. ?It will answer all your questions.

    Good luck.?

I thought it sounded like a super high number on Friday too!  Correct me if I'm wrong (this is our first TTC cycle), but the day I first got a positive OPK means that I'll O 24-48 hours later (Target brand test).

I had a negative OPK Monday - Thursday (Sept 14-17), and then positive on Friday morning.  We had sex Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (12, 13,14,16,17,18,19).  At best, I figure I ovulated either Saturday morning or at latest Sunday morning.  I haven't been temping because I have a weird sleep/wake cycle due to getting call for emergencies in the middle of the night sometimes.

I started spotting a teeny bit on Wed. (23rd).  First HCG was on the 25th because I went in after being concerned about the spotting (which had continued on Thursday & Friday -- hardly anything Sat., Sun. and nothing today).

Third beta test is Wed. @ 8:00 a.m.
