So DS is a tummy sleeper. He hates sleeping on his back. But he has to have a surgery in December on his skull/face: the metopic suture of his skull - that is, the joint that runs vertically down his forehead to his nose. Skull sutures are not supposed to fuse until past 2 years of age and sometimes later so it has to be surgically corrected. The surgery will also involve the bones around his eye sockets. Of course, all of this means that he will not be able to sleep on his tummy for a while after the surgery because he'll need to stay off of his face for a while. I'd like to start training him to sleep on his back. He's going to be dealing with enough after his surgery - his eyes will be swollen shut for a couple days, he'll be hooked up to tubes, etc. It would be great if the position he has to sleep in doesn't have to add to his frustration. But I don't know how to go about training a baby to sleep in a position other than what they're used to. I'd love any and all ideas. TIA.

Re: Back to sleep
I second the rolled up receiving blankets. DS is just under 6 months, and still likes to be swaddled, so he sleeps in a sleep sack with a light blanket or sheet around his arms to keep them secured. The blankets help keep him from rolling onto his tummy, since his arms are secured.
Since you have time now, you might start trying to put him to sleep on his back, and then if he's still fussy after 15 or 30 minutes or whatever you're comfortable with, you could let him go to sleep on his tummy. Hopefully eventually he'd get used to sleeping on his back.
Hugs to your LO!
