  • I know it.  It is hard to listen to him cry and do nothing... Sad

  • My DD HATES the car seat!  She cries like she's hurt the minute we put her in it.  She has always disliked being clipped in but this screaming like she's in pain is a new thing.  DH and I have both made sure there is nothing poking her and that the straps are in the correct position and everything is fine she just hates it.

  • My DS is like this too......Does anyone know if and when it will get better?

I am amazed by the people that say the car puts thier LO to sleep.......not mine, it makes him SCREAM! only sometimes if I put on Baby Praise Born to Praise music on REALLY loud he settles but only for about 5-10 mintues!

DS1 went to sleep every time we got in the car. He was so easy. We took a 6 hour road trip @ 3 weeks with no problems. He slept the whole way.

DS2 is a screamer. He hates the car! What a rude awakening for me. I thought all babies just slept in the car, especially newborns. We drove to the lake an hour away when he was a week old and even then, he basically cried the whole way.

With me or SD in the back with him, it's not as bad. But if I am driving with just him or him and DS1, I am screwed.

  • DD (DC #1) absolutely hated the car when she was a baby. I pretty much dreaded any car trip whether it was the hour ride to my mother's house or a 10 minute trip to the library. I used to stop sometimes 5 or 6 times in a 50 mile trip to nurse and rock her and calm her down, usually to have the screaming start again the minute I put her back in the seat.  It is actually such a dangerous situation between how stressed I was while driving and listening to her and the places on the side of the road I would pull over.  Even if I sat in the back with her while DH drove she would still wail.  It ended when she was about 1 year old and still rear facing (many people suggested I turn the seat around sooner because maybe she would do better, but I resisted this idea and I don't think it would have made a difference anyway).

DS is more the kind of kid who conks out in the car though he does have his car screaming moments too but I can usually head them off by just making sure his basic needs are met before leaving the house and if he is really tired by rocking him a little before putting him into the car.  These things never helped with DD.

Just a few ideas that may or may not help you: After DD had already outgrown it I saw a swaddler that they sell for the carseat-wouldv'e liked to have that when I needed it.  As she got a little older it got a little easier to keep her entertained with car toys (keep a basket full of  toys that you only break out in the car up front to at least disctract them alitte). I wonder if a DVD player would help them when they are wee little.  I have a portable one and it's a lifesaver when they are older (though it is reserved only for longer trips).

Good luck. It's a drag, I know. Hopefully it will end soon for both of your sakes!

  • DD used to like the car and then recently started fussing on rides. After awhile we figured out she was getting too big and didnt need the newborn insert anymore. We took it out and just kept the head support part in. Now she is happy again. She was just cramped, poor thing. Plus I think the insert makes them hot. She was always sweaty when I took her out of the carseat.
