We went to our appt last thursday afternoon to find out I was 2 cm and 80% effaced so we didn't have to come in until Friday morning at 5am.
Friday morning we got there and got hooked up to the IV and all the monitors and the nurse proceeded to tell me there was no order for pitocin in my chart. So, my OB showed up around 6:30 to check on me and we found out she completely overlooked the order and I got started on pitocin about two hours later than initially planned.
The pitocin wasn't too bad for the first few hours. They started very slowly and I got some crampy contractions, but nothing really strong. The doctor came and checked me again around noon and I was 4cm, 90% effaced but the baby was at -2. He decided to break my water and thats when the contractions started to get pretty strong. Everyone said they couldn't believe I was handling them so well because I was so quiet, I guess that is the way I deal with the pain. By 1:15 I was getting miserable and asked for the epidural. By 2pm I had the epidural and HEAVEN. The pain was completely gone and I was a much happier lady.
The only thing that sucked about the epidural was how dead my right leg was. I could still feel my left leg which was nice, but my right leg was completely dead and I wasn't a huge fan of that. (MUCH better than pain though).
I continued to dilate slowly and steady but the baby was not coming down. About 5pm I was 9cm and fully effaced but still -2. They decided to put me in all sorts of funky positions for the next two hours and she finally came down to +1 so we started pushing. I pushed for an hour and it was the weirdest thing since I couldn't feel anything and had NO clue if I was doing it right. The doctor said I could keep trying on my own or we could try using the vaccuum. I was so exhausted that I trusted him and went with the vaccuum and she came a short while later.
A few things of note:
- I barely had any foot swelling in pregnancy and my feet are gigantically swollen and painful now.
- I swore I was never going to have her go to the nursery, but we did in between two feedings our second night in the hospital because DH and I were so insanely sleep deprived.
- Recovery is harder than I imagined. I had an episiotomy and several stiches and am very store. Take the mesh panties- they are fantastic- I left with several pairs. I also love the dermaplast spray- very soothing.
- Breastfeeding is a LOT harder than I thought. I've cried, she's cried. We saw the lactation consultant in the hospital and asked for a lot of help, but when you're with her it is a whole new ballgame. My nipples are cracked and bleeding, but I can see it getting easier and I'm determined to stick with it.
good luck ladies can't wait to see all of your babies!!!

Re: My fairly uneventful birth story
She is gorgeous!!!
It's nice that the nurses didn't bring attention to the little "oops" in the delivery room.-im sure it's to be expected~ especially when mom can't feel lower half whilst pushing.
sorry the labor took so long but glad she's finally here~ take care momma and Ill see you over on 0-6!
Sorry. Double posted.
