Cleaning Stuffed Animals and/or Lovey's

DD doesn't use a pacifier, suck her thumb . . . she sucks on a stuffed animal (her lamb) and we have 4. She crawls and walks around with it in her mouth. She sucks on it to sleep. Needless to say, they are all nasty smelly (the arm parts) - like mildew. I wash them 2-3x a week and they stink the minute she returns the lamb to her mouth. Not to mention that I can't find replacement ones anywhere because Carter's has discontinued them. I am about to wean her so I don't want to take it away from her. How do you get the nasty smell out of the stuffed animals or lovey's?

Re: Cleaning Stuffed Animals and/or Lovey's

  • I wash them in the washing machine and dry them and they are fine.

  • Can you try to limit her use of them to naps & bedtime? DD loves her elephant lovey from Carter's (also discontinued, but I found a similar one at Target). I only let her have them at naptime and bedtime so they stay in her room. I then wash them as often as possible to keep them clean- she ends up sucking on the arms and snout thing.

Or... could you give her another lovey for playtime? That way the lambs get a "break" and less use?

  • Wash it w/ a little vinegar - that seems to get rid of all smells.

FWIW - DD threw up on her lovey Thursday night and would.not.give.it.up for me to wash.  Now - THAT was smelly!  I simply did not have the energy to deal w/ that at 3 am!!

  • DD's loveys are machine washable and okay in the dryer too so that's pretty convenient.  I also only let her use it during nap time/bed time and in her bedroom.  DD hasn't gotten attached to a stuffed animal yet, so sorry can't help you there!
  • if you are already washing them in the washing machine and that isn't doing it for you, try putting them in the freezer for 24 hrs.  This will kill all mildew.  I do this with my leather work shoes because they can get kinda gross and it works like a charm
  • I 2nd the pp that said to try vinegar.
