My parents have well water. It might be something as simple as personal preference. But, also, the water might be really hard or have a lot of extra sulfur or something in it. My parents just had a filtration system put in because of the yucky smell and the effect it was having on their dishes and skin.

THe well water at my parents house is horrible if they do not have their filtration system hooked up. It smells like rotten eggs, its yellow in color. They would never shower in it yet alone use it to mix formula.
A lot of wells don't have fluoride like public water does. Public water has added fluoride.
However, many people may have well water with fluoride, like me. My town is rich in minerals and has naturally occurring fluoride.
We have it tested every year to make sure the fluoride levels are good and there isn't anything funny going on (a local company is the best resource since there are thousands of things you could test for, but a lot of them might not be an issue in your area).
Wells can become contaminated with ecoli very easily. Adult immune systems are strong enough to fight off the bacteria, a baby's is not. You should have your well tested periodically for this, if it tests positive, they just shock the well to clear it up. Our well was contaminated when we first bought our house. Luckily, we've had no issues since then. But, I wouldn't drink that water myself, so there is no way I'd give it to the baby.

Re: why can't you use well water?
For what? Bottles?
