I found a sulfate-free shampoo & conditioner (I haven't had time to go find Jason's yet, but I still want to try that one)...the one I tried was by Loreal....I LURVE it.  What a difference. I told my MIL what you said, she tried it too and also could tell the difference immediately.  And she wasn't even unhappy with her hair or with her current shampoo, and now she's going to switch.
