2nd Trimester

anyone not told work yet

Okay,  I have not told my work I am pregnant yet, for various reasons and really want to try to wait till 20 weeks or so to tell them. However the more time that goes by the worse I feel about it.  Some of my good friends at work know and are keeping the secret and so far I don't think any one else suspects anything but I just feel really bad and am worried my boss is going to be upset when I finally tell him.  Anyone else wait till later in the pregnancy to tell the boss? How did it go?

Re: anyone not told work yet

  • I'm planning on telling my boss today. I don't really consider it that late for me, I'm actually 15 weeks today (need to change my ticker).

I was out of town for two weeks and then my boss was out of town which is why I waited this long to begin with.  I want to tell him before anyone else because my office is very gossipy.

I'm really nervous and I don't know why...

  • I only told my principal so far.  Mainly bc I know people will stare at me, and maybe try to touch me.  NOT of a fan of that.

I will let most people figure it out for themselves.

  • I haven't told the owner of my work I work in a small office like there are a total of 5 people who work here including me. The other 3 people know and think its funny that my boss hasn't noticed. I don't feel bad because its not like im not showing .. its quite obvious I'm pregnant she just is too dumb to realize it and there isn't a law that says you HAVE to tell them. Though if she hasn't realized it in a few more weeks I might tell her. But since I am quitting soon anyways its pointless she will just tell me stories about how when she was pregnant.... and I cant take it she already bothers me every day about the house we just bought.

  • A lady who shared a cubicle wall with DH several years ago told her boss after the baby was born.  I don't know if it was a surprise and she didn't know...or if she was just keeping it a secret.  Zip it!

I don't think there is anything wrong with waiting.  (I work from home, so while my boss and friends know I'm pregnant most people will be kinda shocked when they see me next week.  If I was in the office every day, they would know just my looking at me.  LOL)

  • I didn't tell until right around 18/19 weeks. I am glad I didn't tell any earlier as my work freaks out about these things and I wanted to show that I could be pregnant without it affecting my work. I also think giving them 4-5 months notice is still plenty of time for them to prepare for your leave. But, I do think you need to tell him in the next few weeks before your bump is too obvious.

  • I had to tell my work pretty early on because I was very sick and throwing up all the time.  I wanted them to know that I was not sick with some kind of flu!

  • I told my boss just after 14 weeks and the rest of my department a day shy of 17 weeks.  Not sure if you'll find the same thing, but hardly anyone in my dept was surprised.  They all claimed to have see me "changing" even though I thought I hid it well.  I think the real give away was not drinking while on a business trip a few weeks before.  (We were all in Hong Kong for 2 weeks, so it's a lot of togetherness with the same people morning, noon &  night!)

My boss was fine with my news.  She also suspected, but was waiting for me to tell her.

  • I waited until 20 weeks to till work and I am really glad that I did as my company isn't that family friendly (My evaluator's response "I wasn't expecting this from you"). Fortunately I wasn't showing at all. I've heard that it can cause problems if you're showing and don't let people know. Additional advice I was given is 1) if you're working with guys, most won't notice until you tell them 2) Tell your boss after something good (either the wrap up of a really good project, a promotion, sale, etc). Then you have proven the pregnancy hasn't impacted your work 3) If other coworkers know, you should tell the your boss sooner rather than later as news travels quickly.  Those are just my thoughts...
  • I told mine around 12 weeks because I was throwing up all day one day and had to leave early even though I had a night meeting.

Actually, FMLA says you need to give at least 30 days notice if foreseeable.

  • I told pretty early (9 weeks?) because I was so sick. I would have preferred to have waited until the second trimester.

That said, I would tell your boss before too much longer. I think it's best to let them know before you start showing.

  • I told most of my coworkers very early... 8 weeks.  I work for a large company and I haven't officially informed my HR (I probably won't until after Christmas.)

  • Thanks ladies, I think I will end up telling my boss at 20 weeks, the main thing is it puts me on like a desk duty type thing and that is totally boring to me so I am trying to hold out.
