3rd Trimester

I am clearly stating this post is about strollers

I know how annoying stroller posts get, but I wanted to get some feedback.

We've begun our stroller search and have decided we want a Travel System. Since my IL are buying it for us (bless them) we don't want to look at anything too much more than $250. While looking at the few travel systems they had at Target we found we liked the Eddie Bauer Adventurer Travel System the best (they only had 4 to look at so we didn't buy it).

We wanted to look into more strollers before deciding but I can't find the info I really want to know the most. We didn't like the Graco and another brand because when the seat locked into the stroller it locked onto the tray, and was very loose and would flip up quite a bit while the Eddie Bauer and I believe Evenflo had a tension rod that was insterted into the stroller that the seat connected to, this was more sturdy and just felt more safe to us.

Does anyone know which other strollers have this tension rod for the seat to connect to. We would like to look at more with this feature.

Thank you!

  • Check Safety First. Bought one and it has the safety rod, although I can not use the carseat in my car and it totally pisses me off! Make sure you test out the base of the carseat, I had to use graco cause the base has the incline option.

  • If you trust the baby bargains book, it pretty much says that the car seats in the safety first/eddie bauer strollers are not recommended.  Pretty much all these car seats got a D-F rating and I believe the one that comes with the stroller systems got a "Not recommended" by the highway safety administration.  Just some information to help with your thoughts.

I don't know much about the tension rod so I can't really help you there.

  • I bought the Chicco Cortina system.  It does not use a rod, however it also does not lock on to the tray.  The car seat locks into two levers on either side of the stroller.  the carseat may rest on the tray, but it doesn't lock into it.

I don't have the baby bargains book and could not find much safety info for free on the internet, so I was going by consumer ratings on websites like babies r us and Target.com

I've seen nothing but positive reviews on these strollers, I would just feel so guilty asking my IL's to spend close to $400 on a stroller for us, considering they just bought us a car! They asked to buy us a stroller and would spend that much if we asked them to, but I wanted to find something a little less expensive.

  • FYI did you put the red tabs over the bottom of the Graco carseat once you put it into the stroller?? It sounds like you didn't which is why the bottom of the seat can flip up a bit. The seat locks into the snack tray but then there are 2 red tabs at the bottom (connected to the stroller) that flip over the bottom of the carseat to keep it secure.

the Chicco travel system I purchased was $299 - it was called Discovery.  I know that is still more than $250, but it's well rated and well-priced.

I'm not positive that we did. We thought it was odd that it moved around so much, so we tried re clipping it and adjusting it for quite some time before we we decided that it must be in correctly. I will try it out again when we go to look at strollers in the store this weekend. Thanks for the heads up!

  • Any particular reason you are looking at only travel systems?  I wanted to be able to attach the infant car seat to my stroller, but in the end we opted against the travel systems.

Lots of independent strollers now offer infant car seat adapters.

  • As PP said- on the Graco- did you flip up the little red tabs?  They are kind of hidden at times under the padding around the sides.  DH and I thought it was a little flippy before we found that, too, but then it was sturdy.

I have a couple of friends who have had the Eddie Bauer system, and did not like it after using it routinely.  They said it was far too heavy for that type of stroller, and the other said hers wore out.

The Baby Bargains book historically hasn't liked them, and I think Consumer Reports only gives it a moderate rating.

I don't like travel systems for us, but we did look at a lot of them before we purchased the stroller we did get.  But, I would buy the Chicco Cortina before I bought the Graco.  It strolled much better with weight in it than the Graco, and the carseat is highly rated.

Look online at Stroller Depot once you find something you like.  They are fabulous to deal with, and shipping was fast and free!  Also, no tax online.  The Chicco in my area is about 279.99.

Oh thank you! The reviews I was reading said it was around $369! I'm not sure what modle they were reviewing though. If we don't find anything else we really like or feel safe with we will probably go with this.

When I was just on the BRU site, they did have a Chicco Cortina system in a funky print for $369 or so!  Not sure why the difference in price, but you're right.

  • We brought a Graco Metrolite travel system

Both myself and my DH are engineers and we spent almost 3 hours in BRU looking at stroller systems, after lots of opening and collapsing the systems, throwing them about, checking out the wheels, suspension, locking and release levers we decided this was the easiest to collapse and open one handed, it was super light weight and a little more compact for sticking in the boot/truck of your cars (we have a Jeep and a PT cruiser) the car seat came with the adjustable base, and when snapped into place in the stroller was very sturdy. It cost us $270 a little more than i wanted to spend, but i believe it was well worth the cost.

  • We also got the Chicco Cortino.  And right now with the coupons from BRU you can get it pretty close to your $250 price range.  We opted for the key fit  car seat, which is rated to 30 lbs.  It isn't available in the preset system that I have seen, but they have the stroller and seats in the same patterns.  Maybe you could let your IL's buy the stroller and you could buy the carseat?
  • My husband and I got the Chicco Travel System in the Discovery print. Although we havent gotten to use it yet, we love the look of it and it got great reviews on Consumer reports. I have a friend with a 7 weeks old with the exact travel system and she loves it. Also, with the coupon we got ours for less then $250. Hope this helps :)
  • If you live near a BRU, have someone demonstrate how the Graco works so you can see how it is secured.  Also, with the coupons they have all the time you should be able to get the Chicco Cortina system for under $300.  In fact, the Discovery pattern is $299 before coupons right now.
