2nd Trimester

What should I do? I cant find Thimerosal-free flu shot...

Seriously... I think I live in the backwoods! I have called 3 pharmacies and they all only have the flu shot with thimerosal in it.  What should I do? I am assuming i should still get the shot, but I hate the idea of putting the baby at risk.

  • I would call your primary doctor and see if they can find someone for you.  Do you have Walgreens around you? I know they have both.

  • does your OB offer one?  they should have a mom/baby safe flu shot for you...
  • From what I understand, there's such a trace amt in those shots that it has no effect on baby. I get the regular flu shot every year, got it w/ DD, and got it the other week for this pregnancy. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it. If it's really stressing you out, you can call your dr. and see if they have it.

  • IMO I would not get the shot then.  When the nurse who administered my flu shot asked if I was coming in for round 2 and get the H1N1 and I said no, she told me "Make sure you wash your hands a lot, use hand sanitizer, and do not touch your eyes or face. That will help lessen your chances of getting the flu by a lot".

  • My doctor said thimerosal is ok. I'm getting the thimerosal-free shot though b/c my pharmacy has it, so I might as well. Call you OB and see what he/she says.

  • I couldn't find one either. One place I called the nurse had never even heard of a preservative free shot. My OB is back ordered on his shots but he said that I was fine to get the normal one.

    This exactly.

  • Try calling your county health department.  They should be able to direct you to a clinic that might have it.

Yeah, this was the first place I called b/c I saw it on here that they offered it. I will call my OB and see what they recommend I guess.

I hate having all these random things to worry about! Just want to keep the baby safe!

  • I ran into that same problem two years ago with my first and I live in a major city.  I ended up just getting the regular shot and my dd turned out fine.  I'm going to get another one this year and forget the stress of trying to find the T-free flu shot.
  • DH and I both got ours at our LO's pediatricians office, even though he hasn't been born yet.
